Tissue is the Issue: No Meat, No Treat

Presented by:
Cristi Rigazio, HT
Sentara Laboratory Services

Meet the Speaker

Cristi Rigazio earned her Bachelor of Science in 2001 and obtained her Histotechnician (HT) certification in 2004 while working in a pre-clinical research setting. She later transitioned to a hospital environment while pursuing graduate studies, earning a Master of Science in Administration in 2008. Following graduation, Cristi was selected to lead the development and opening of a new pathology laboratory for a gastroenterology practice. In 2016, Cristi joined Sentara Laboratory Services as a Clinical Specialist for Anatomic Pathology. She currently serves in a dual role as Operations Manager and Clinical Specialist, providing system-wide leadership for anatomic pathology and histology services across a 12-hospital healthcare system, with a focus on operational excellence, quality, and workforce development.

Presentation Abstract

Broad molecular profiling to assess biomarkers that drive treatment decisions are now recommended by guidelines for numerous solid tumors. Pathologists, oncologists, radiologists, histologists, and molecular biologists are all key stakeholders in ensuring biomarker testing is performed according to the guidelines.
Due to the dearth of tissue available from fine needle aspirates or core needle biopsies, tissue
stewardship is necessary to allocate the available tissue appropriately. The histology team should understand and address pre-analytical variables affecting the quality of biomarker testing results and how tissue quantity plays into that. It is important to understand how preanalytical variables that occur during tissue processing affect different technologies and how to work together across disciplines to optimize tissue quality and utilization to drive biomarker testing.

Advancements in Histology in Diagnostic Molecular Data and the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Modern Medicine

Presented by:
Dr. Nicholas Hoo-Fatt

Meet the Speaker

Dr. Nicholas Hoo-Fatt has been recognized as one of the Top 55 Laboratory Professionals Under 55 and is the recipient of the 2024 NSH Excellence in Whole Slide Imaging Award. Additionally, he was named an ASCP Blue Ribbon Top 5 Finalist. With over 20 years of experience in histology, Dr. Hoo- Fatt is a leader in bioinformatics, digital pathology, and molecular pathology. He has pioneered the use of RT-PCR for biomarker detection in cancer patients, implementing a 24-hour turnaround time (TAT) methodology that enhances diagnostic efficiency. Beyond his contributions to laboratory medicine, Dr. Hoo-Fatt is a passionate educator who fosters curiosity and learning among his students. Committed to giving back to the community, he leverages his expertise to mentor and inspire individuals of all ages to achieve their aspirations.

Presentation Abstract

A discussion on how recent advancements have revolutionized the ability to generate diagnostic molecular data from patient tissue. Combining developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), are now at the forefront of precision medicine. The practice of machine learning algorithms have enabled clinicians to analyze and interpret complex biological information. The utilization of AI and ML continue to evolve in understanding disease resistance mechanisms, tumor origination, risk assessment, early diagnosis, patient prognosis estimation, and personalized treatment plans with unprecedented accuracy. This convergence of technology and healthcare underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaborations. Ensuring that innovations in computational biology translate into tangible benefits for patients treatment outcome.

"Specimen Processing: Current Trends and Case Insights in Dermatopathology"

Meet the Speaker

Dr. Grace Wang earned her medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine. She completed her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology, as well as a fellowship in dermatopathology, at the University of Michigan. A board-certified dermatopathologist, she currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatopathology and Dermatology at the University of Michigan.

Presentation Abstract

This presentation is divided into three parts which aim to offer a clinically relevant overview of diagnostic techniques and ancillary testing in dermatopathology.

The first part focuses on essential grossing techniques for dermatologic specimens. Emphasis will be placed on handling more specialized specimens including alopecia and nail unit biopsies.

The second part highlights recent developments in immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics in dermatopathology. Select newer markers and testing modalities will be reviewed with a focus on their diagnostic utility and limitations.

The final part presents several dermatologic cases encountered in clinical practice. Under a unifying theme, these cases will demonstrate diagnostic challenges and underscore the importance of clinicopathologic correlation. In summary, this presentation aims to reinforce foundational knowledge in specimen processing, current trends in dermatopathology and highlight histotechnologists’ important contribution to patient care.

Lessons In Chemistry:
For the Histology Lab And the Kitchen
Presented by:
Ada Feldman, MS, HT/HTL(ASCP)

Presentation Abstract
What does cheese have in common with tissue fixation? How can preparing a hardboiled egg teach us about properly processing a biopsy? How does the water temperature for brewing tea have anything to do with slide drying? The disciplines of cooking and histotechnology both rely on chemistry to acquire the proper end products. This presentation will be an enlightening discussion of seemingly different, yet similar disciplines. Histotechnology topics include fixation, tissue processing, and chemical grades.

Breaking the Acid Habit: Smarter Decalcification with EDTA
Presented by:
Michelle Bell, HT/QIHC(ASCP)cm
Milestone Medical

Presentation Abstract

EDTA is becoming a topic of discussion as we progress toward more personalized healthcare. To successfully implement this change, laboratories first need to understand the mechanisms involved and how important each step in the process is, from fixation to RNA/DNA recovery. In this workshop, we will discuss how EDTA differs from traditional, acid-based decalcification methods and why it is considered superior. We will discuss the many potential hurdles along the way related to successful EDTA decalcification to ensure optimal RNA and DNA integrity alone with exceptional morphology and IHC staining. Then we will discuss implementation, validation, and ways to accelerate this process.
