Ever wonder why a hydraulic cylinder that was fine last month is suddenly leaking? Nine times out of ten, it's the rod seals.

These photos are from a recent teardown.

First one's the seal bore, packed with old sealant that should never have been used as a fix.

Second one's the actual piston seals once we got it apart, worn well past where they can do their job. Once seals go, contamination gets in behind them and the problem snowballs fast.

If your equipment's leaking, losing pressure, or just feels off, get it looked at before it turns into a bigger repair. We'll tear it down, show you what's actually wrong, and get it back together right.

A few people have been asking who's behind Brunswick Machine & Hydraulics, so here's the short version.

Jeff Kemp is the owner. He grew up in Virginia Beach and spent years running a marine and industrial engineering business in South Florida before relocating to the Lake Gaston area to be closer to family.

That background is exactly what's behind this shop: hydraulics, machining, welding, and fabrication for the farms, forestry crews, and industrial operations around Brunswick County.

Last night is a good example of how Jeff runs things. A customer called at 7 p.m. needing to drop off a job before heading out of town. Jeff met him at the shop, reviewed the project with him, and got it on the schedule. Our hours are posted Monday through Friday, 8 to 5, but if you need something outside of that, call the number. Jeff picks up.

We put together a one-page info sheet covering everything we do, our service area, and how to reach us. Pinning it here so it's easy to find, and easy to share if you know someone who needs a machine shop they can actually call. We also do local pickup and drop-off, so getting your equipment to us isn't the hard part.

Changing the oil and filter isn't enough. This is why.

This is the inside of a hydraulic tank before a full clean. Years of sludge and varnish build up on the walls, and none of that comes out just from draining the oil and swapping the filter. Fresh oil goes in, picks up what's left behind, and you're back to contaminated fluid within weeks.

A proper service means getting into the tank itself; wiping it down, clearing the buildup, making sure nothing old is left to contaminate the new oil. It takes longer, but it's the difference between a fix that lasts and one that doesn't.

Old vs. new — hydraulic cooler replacement done right.

That's the old hydraulic cooler on the right, worn down after years of hard use, next to its brand new replacement on the left. Small part, big job, a failing cooler can lead to overheating and bigger problems down the line if it's not caught in time.

Swapped, tested, and back in service. Just another day keeping equipment running the way it should.

This is what happens when a pin decides it's not leaving on its own.

You can spend an hour heating it, hammering it, soaking it in penetrating oil overnight and trying again in the morning. Or you can cut it.

Rusted solid like this, cutting the pin is faster and just as effective as fighting it all afternoon. The cylinder still comes off either way. One way just costs you less of your day.

This valve block runs an entire piece of equipment. Every section you see here controls a different function, and if even one of them wears out, the whole machine loses power or starts drifting on you.

Most people assume that means a new block. New ones are expensive and back-ordered for weeks.

Instead, we pull it apart section by section, clean and inspect every bore, replace what's worn, and rebuild it to spec.
