A day in the life of a small engine technician, part 11. Sometimes you just have to wonder about who the heck designs this stuff... Seven - SEVEN - fasteners to hold on a recoil assembly. Just adding extra time to jobs which means more expense to the customer. Equipment: No naming and shaming today!!! 😃

A little something to keep you safe- when felling a tree of any size you ALWAYS get away from the stump! Choose a path at a 45 degree angle backwards from the direction of fall and clear it. When the tree starts to move you don’t hang around to admire your work, you move. Every foot further away from the stump exponentially makes the chances of injury lower. Be safe, folks!

A day in the life of a small engine technician, part 10. Ah, the great bargain yard sale find! "Ran fine when it got put up, might need an oil change." That's why it's $50! So, we found no fuel flow out of the tank. The petcock was jammed solid with hardened fuel and corrosion- a lot of it from the inside of the tank. It took over an hour to clean the petcock and the tank as best it could be. New fuel lines and filter, air filter, some wiring work, carb work...and yes, the oil change. With the work, it was still a good price for a loud box that makes power when you need it! Keep proper storage fuel in your generator, folks. Equipment: OLD Coleman generator, Briggs engine.

Workshop Radio! Back to the audiobooks and as often the case, it's disaster related! The Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta in 1946 was the deadliest in US history. I think the most impactful thing from the book by Sam Heys and Allen B. Goodwin so far has been learning the amount of hotel fires and deaths that there were in those times- it's crazy. As a pretty frequent hotel user I sure appreciate the regulations and codes enacted after these events to keep us safe now.

A day in the life of a small engine technician, part 9. Sometimes you do stuff that doesn't pay...like fixing your own tools!! Because my Makita impact gun is a beast, it broke the el cheapo bit I was using (shame on me) flush. No way to grab it. So, I drilled her out just enough to use a random cap screw threaded into it as a way grab a hold of the bit. I used cross cuts to pry her free and back to work. Equipment: Makita XDT04.
