A little history
The 59th Chemical Company was constituted on February 25th, 1943 at Camp Campbell, Kentucky as the 59th Chemical Maintenance Company and officially activated on August 15th, 1943. The Company went on to serve in World War II, salvaging and repairing 4.2 inch mortars, flamethrowers, smoke generators, and decontamination equipment in northern France and the Rhineland in Germany. Following WWII, the company was officially redesigned and designated as the 59th Chemical Company on May 11th, 1953.
The unit relocated to Germany in 1959 and was subsequently inactivated on September 1st, 1963. In response to the redesign of the Chemical Corps in 1985, the 59th Chemical Company was reactivated on July 1st, 1989 at Fort Drum, NY where it remains to this day.
On September 25th, 1990 the 59th Chemical Company deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield and Defense of Saudi Arabia to provide decontamination support in Kuwait. In 2003, the Company deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, again tasked with providing decontamination.
On June 3rd, 2019 the Company assumed the Regionally Aligned Forces - Korea mission at Camp Hovey, Korea as the third rotation since the mission’s creation. The Mountain Dragons provided thorough decontamination capabilities to the 210th Field Artillery Brigade (MLRS), 2nd Infantry Division.
