Winter is approaching. I't time to get your hot tubs in shape before the cold sets in.

If you are getting foam in your spa it could be coming from your swimsuit. When the swim suit is run through the washer it leaves a soap residue. It's better to rinse it out in the sink. If you do have foam there are many products available to remove foam. If you buy them by the quart you can buy a spray bottle at the dollar store and mix it half and half with water. Then spray the foam to dissipate it. This lets you get two quarts of the foam remover you need for the price of one.

Just a reminder. Make sure and clean your filter. Even though it's cold out and you may not be using your spa much. The water balance still needs to be maintained and the filter or filters kept clean.

In this cold weather your spa might go down and nobody can get to it before a potential freeze. There are small electric heaters available at hardware stores or even Wal-Mart. They have a two speed fan and have an adjustable thermostat. They usually are less than $20. You can open up the equipment side of the spa and turn the thermostat about three quarters of the way up and the fan on low. Put it in a fairly open space and put the side back on so it does not pinch the cord. It will keep the water and pipes in the spa from freezing until service can be gotten. I carry several of these heaters on my service van to use if I need to have the spa inoperable for even up to a couple of weeks. Even in sustained below freezing weather. They are in plastic cases so they don't get too hot even if they are close to a pump of plumbing.

If your heater quits but the pump still runs DO NOT TURN OFF THE SPA OR DRAIN IT. Let it stay running. The heat from the running motor and the water moving through the pipes will prevent freezing.
