Now the client has a clearer picture of how their house will look when it’s done. And trade partners will have no question of where to install. Simple, yet effective. Excellent attention to detail.

Join Adrienne Stolwyk of Missouri-based Monarch Architecture and Building Integrity, and Ace McArleton of Vermont-based New Frameworks, who have joined forces in the newly-launched US Continental Seed Collaborative: a Straw Panel Producers’ Network - to learn about Straw Structural-Insulated Panels (S-SIPs) and how they could fit into your next project. Both Building Integrity and New Frameworks are members of the collaborative, founded by New Frameworks, which disperses technical knowledge of how to specify, manufacture , and build with S-SIPs like seeds across the land. Helical Piers & Passive Houses
Pier foundations can offer numerous benefits, including quicker installation times, reduced labor costs, and less disruption to the surrounding environment. While helical piers are highly versatile, their effectiveness and therefore economics are impacted by soil conditions and project design. Learn about conditions that may influence their appropriateness along with what information an installer will typically require to quote and install at your project. Post and beam construction also impacts the design approach for the thermal envelope and mechanical systems. Jonah will discuss previous experiences and solutions to these issues through a series of case studies.

Embodied carbon in new home construction:
Over the past five years, the building industry has come to understand that embodied carbon emissions — the greenhouse gases released over the life cycle of building products and buildings — has been an unfortunate blind spot in our decarbonization efforts. Embodied carbon emissions from new homes tend to be around 35-55 tons per house, a figure that outweighs the operational emissions of the house for anywhere from 5-30 years. Annually, the total emissions from home building in the US represents 35-55 million tons, a number as large as the entire economies of some European countries.

So what can we do?
In this presentation, Chris Magwood of RMI’s Carbon-Free Buildings program and director of HomebuildersCAN will show what we know about embodied carbon today: How it’s assessed, which building products account for the largest percentages, and what we can do about it. The talk will examine the forthcoming RESNET Standard 1550 for measuring and reporting embodied carbon and will show some case studies of highly efficient and affordable homes built today with greatly reduced embodied carbon.
