How a Dry Bilge System Works: Vacuum Pickup and Air-Pressure Discharge

Bilge fluid isnā€™t always clean water. It can contain oil, grime, salts, and other residues. How you move that fluid matters.

Arid is an automatic, processor-controlled system that uses vacuum and air pressure to remove residual bilge fluid at the source. Vacuum pulls it in. Air pressure pushes it out.

Arid first creates a vacuum inside its collection chamber. That vacuum draws fluid through pickups positioned at the low points where it collects. The system then uses air pressure to push the collected fluid through the discharge line.

The compressor handles air. The collection chamber handles bilge fluid. That separation is fundamental to our design. Bilge fluid does not pass through the air compressor, keeping the fluid and its contaminants out of that componentā€™s internal pumping mechanism. This separation is part of how Arid is engineered for years of automatic residual-water removal.

Bilge water is more than just water. When residual water sits below deck, it can contribute to odor, humidity, corrosion, mold, mildew and long-term moisture problems throughout the vessel.

In this video, Alfred Baurley of Arid Bilge Systems is joined by Steve Gilchrist of Straight Up Marine, an Arid Bilge Systems Certified Dealer, to explain how the Arid system automatically removes residual bilge water from multiple areas throughout the boat.

Using vacuum, Arid draws fluid from low points throughout the vessel ā€” including the bow, midship, stern, machinery spaces and other wet areas ā€” into one central system before automatically discharging it through a controlled outlet.

The result is a cleaner, drier bilge with less standing water around pumps, fittings, wiring, engines, thrusters, gyros and other onboard equipment.
