IMDS and OEMs. Did you know that not every automotive OEM can use to collect data? It’s true, IMDS is actually a private system run by a group of automotive OEMs. Only data that is in the supply chains for those OEMs can be submitted through IMDS. How do you know if you are in a supply chain for one of the participating OEMs? You can find a list here: https://public.mdsystem.com/en/web/imds-public-pages/community. This is the Community page for IMDS. If you don’t find the OEM you are looking for on this page, you can double check with the IMDS Service Desks. There are a few OEMs who participate but have decided to keep their participation confidential. One of the Service desks should be able to confirm if the OEM you are asking about is a participant in IMDS. If you don’t find them listed AND the Service Desk says an OEM is not a participant, don’t put the data into IMDS. There are possible civil and criminal penalties for misusing IMDS. Why IMDS? The data you enter into IMDS is not just something to get done so you can submit your PPAP documents. The data is used by the OEMs to respond to regulatory requirements all over the world. In the EU the End-of-Life Vehicle Directive (ELV) requires that a car be 95% recoverable, reusable or recyclable (RRR). IMDS data is used to support the RRR percentage for a car. The percentage must be proven before the car can be put on the market in the EU. The data is also used to prepare dismantling instructions for the vehicle at the end of its life. OEMs can also use the data to determine conflict minerals (CM) content and identify suppliers with CM in their parts. This helps OEMs survey their suppliers to meet the annual CM filing requirements in the U.S.

IMDS data is also a foundational input to performing a life cycle assessment (LCA) analysis on a car. LCA looks at how much energy, water and other resources are required to make a car as well as how much greenhouse gas and waste is generated. LCA is critical to moving toward a more sustainable use of resources as well as meeting the EU’s goal of a circular economy.

OEMs can also use IMDS data to analyze potential issues and get ahead of them. These include getting an early start on eliminating substances that are headed toward stricter regulation such as REACH SVHCs or identifying critical substances such as rare earths that could choke production if supplies were interrupted.

The data you enter into IMDS is important. It is critical that every tier in the supply chain take the time to do IMDS right. Your IMDS data matters and is relied upon in so many ways.
