Round isn't the only answer. Corrugated steel pipe systems can be manufactured in a wide range of shapes and configurations to address hydraulic requirements, clearance limitations, site conditions and project needs.

From round pipe and pipe-arch to larger structural plate configurations, that versatility gives designers options when the site doesn't fit neatly into a standard solution.

Because sometimes the best solution isn't about making the site fit the structure. It's about designing the structure to fit the site.

🔧 The pipe doesn't work alone. Flexible pipe design relies on something that's easy to overlook once the project is complete: the interaction between the pipe and the soil surrounding it.

Proper bedding, backfill placement and compaction help create a soil-structure system that supports loads and allows the installed pipe to perform as designed.

That's why installation requirements aren't simply construction details. They're an important part of the engineered system. The finished project may hide the backfill, bedding and separation materials from view, but their job is far from over.

Sometimes the smartest infrastructure solutions start with a simple question: What if we modify the pipe?

Along State Highway 64 near Kamiah, Idaho, a steep slope created an unusual drainage challenge.

The Idaho Transportation Department needed to replace an aging 36-inch full-round downdrain while improving access for inspection and maintenance.

Lane Enterprises, LLC developed a custom corrugated steel solution that combines open half-round drainage sections with full-round connection points. The design provides easier access while helping maintain strength and stability along the steep grade.

Knife River Corporation completed the installation as part of the SH-64 flood repair effort.
