One thing stood out in this week’s poll 👀

When asked what matters most in long-term culvert performance:

🏆 **Service life received 100% of the votes.** And interestingly…**No one selected initial cost.**

That reinforces something infrastructure professionals already know: the lowest upfront cost does not always result in the lowest long-term cost.

That thinking is exactly why The NCSPA developed tools like our Least Cost Calculator, helping engineers compare long-term present value life cycle costs across drainage material alternatives.

Because performance over time matters. 🔩

The NCSPA’s Least Cost Calculator helps engineers compare long-term pipe life cycle costs for corrugated steel pipe (CSP), reinforced concrete pipe (RCP), HDPE, and polypropylene (PP) using service life, refurbishment, recurring annual costs, and residual value.

🏆 When emergency infrastructure fails, long-term thinking matters.

After a failing culvert forced the closure of State Route 63 near West Lebanon, Indiana, the project team faced an urgent challenge: restore a major four-lane highway while building a solution designed to last. The result? An award-winning upgrade.

Lane Enterprises, LLC earned two top honors from The NCSPA for the West Lebanon Emergency Culvert Replacement, taking home both the 2026 DOT Project of the Year Award and the Polymer Coated Project of the Year Award.

The project replaced a deteriorating culvert from the early 1970s with a 15-foot diameter, 242-foot-long polymer coated steel structural plate pipe, improving hydraulic capacity and expected service life. Even better, the upgraded system is expected to double the service life of the original structure, helping reduce future disruptions on this critical corridor.

Sometimes the best emergency fix is also the smartest long-term investment.

Quick Tech Take 💡

Infrastructure performance is not just about what gets installed.

Service life depends on a combination of:

✔️ Material selection
✔️ Environmental conditions
✔️ Installation quality
✔️ Long-term maintenance

The strongest systems are built with long-term performance in mind.

Friday Question 👀

What’s one infrastructure topic you wish more people understood?

We’ll start:
➡️ Good infrastructure is usually the infrastructure nobody notices.

🏆 Award-Winning Innovation in the Woods 🌲

What happens when a challenging forest crossing demands durability, speed, and minimal environmental disturbance? You rethink the foundation.

Lane Enterprises, LLC earned two top honors from The NCSPA with the Middle Santiam Creek Tributary project, taking home both the 2026 CSP & Pipe Arch Project of the Year Award and the Aluminized Coating Project of the Year Award.

Located near Sweet Home, Oregon, this project featured a 108-inch corrugated steel pipe culvert replacement in steep, forested terrain with unstable soils and strict environmental requirements. However, the real innovation came from below.

Instead of traditional poured concrete foundations, crews used interlocking K-rails to create a stable, modular base for the pipe. As a result, installation time dropped by more than 60%, site disturbance stayed minimal, and erosion risks were reduced in this sensitive environment.

Sometimes the smartest infrastructure solutions are also the simplest.

Infrastructure works best when nobody notices it. 🔩

Behind every roadway, development, and drainage system is infrastructure quietly doing its job.

Reliable performance matters.

🚨 After wildfire came flooding.

When devastating fires scorched more than 47,000 acres near Flagstaff, Arizona, communities suddenly faced a new threat: catastrophic flooding.

Originally, this emergency mitigation effort considered reinforced concrete box culverts. However, the logistics quickly became overwhelming. An estimated 11,000 truckloads would have been required to move materials into impacted residential areas.

Instead, the project converted to corrugated steel pipe and brought production directly to the jobsite with a mobile pipe mill, reducing hauling, accelerating delivery, and helping protect more than 1,500 homes.

The result? A resilient flood mitigation system designed to help families sleep easier during monsoon season.

🏆 Congratulations to Contech Engineered Solutions , the winner of The NCSPA’s 2026 Conversions Project of the Year Award.

What Happens When Stormwater Has Nowhere to Go? 💧

As development increases and usable land becomes more limited, underground stormwater storage is becoming an increasingly valuable solution.

Corrugated steel pipe cistern systems can provide substantial storage capacity while preserving valuable space above ground. Design considerations such as maintenance access, structural capacity, design life, and installation conditions all play a role in long-term performance.

NCSPA Technical Note 207 explores design considerations for corrugated steel pipe cisterns, including placement options, maintenance needs, and stormwater management applications.
