For the Knifemaker, or fabricator, this belt grinder is amazing, and we have a few of them ready to go. The Kraken 2X72 Belt Grinder Kit’s ready to go and locked in at a lower price.
This grinder has been very well received around the world with some big-name knife makers getting rid of their “Big Name’ grinders for these. We also have a few repeat customers that have come back and purchased an additional units to add to their capabilities.
Unfortunately, the steel prices keep fluctuating so much, I don’t know what next batch price will be.
Here are the details on the grinder kit:
All pieces have been precision laser cut from .250” & .375” A36 HRPO steel using Tab & Slot assembly methodology for accurate, easy layout and assembly. This is the method we use on our welding fixture tables we sell. No additional metal is required to complete these grinders.
All hardware is included and is top quality stuff, all the pivots have Oilite bronze bushings and shoulder bolts for smooth operations, long life, and are serviceable.
We have implemented a ratchet and pawl tensioning system and a sort of unique tracking system that pivots the motor and drive wheel along the centerline of the motor allowing for forward and reverse tracking.
The grinder rotates from vertical to horizontal use with a positive lock in both positions.
The design allows for easy tracking and running in forward and reverse belt rotation, some designs struggle running in reverse.
It does have two tooling arm slots so you can use a platen and tooling rest in place at the same time. The tooling arm slots are also protected to reduce or eliminate galling done by the tooling handle used to clamp the tooling arm in place. You can use any standard 1 ½”x1 ½” tool rest or other tooling accessories.
This kit comes as a weld together kit, you will receive all the precision laser cut tab & slot designed metal parts, 5″ drive wheel and 3″ tension wheel and all the hardware, bolts, shoulder bolts, bushings, shims, washers, nuts etc. and an assembly manual full of illustrations to make assembly a breeze.
To complete the build of the KRAKEN Grinder, you will need to do some welding, threading of a few holes, and have basic hand tools and hex wrenches to complete the build, but it goes together very nicely and with the tab and slot design, the fit and function is spot on and maintains square while you weld it.
The grinder It is designed to work with a 2HP 56C faced motor and a VFD (not included), we used a Leeson 2hp 3ph motor and a KBAC-27D VFD.
You would need to provide your own 56C style motor and a VFD.
Also available is the platen and deep backing plate assembly, this has a 15″ 1-1/2″ X 1-1/2″ aluminum tooling arm drilled and tapped for the D Backing plate to be bolted too.
The platen assembly (weld together) is designed with the same Tab & Slot design as the Kraken Grinder for ease and precision of assembly.
This kit also includes a replaceable 2″ X 8″ wear plate that is bolted to the platen, you can modify it to adhere a glass platen on if you choose.
Just like the Kraken Kit, all the fasteners along with two 2″ diameter aluminum contact wheels are included to finish the build.
Minimal amount of welding required to make this very sturdy platen/backing/tooling arm assembly.
