CAPS Outdoor Classroom VBC building project

CAPS Outdoor Classroom VBC building project An Outdoor Classroom for CAPS at The Springdale School. There is a place for everyone to get involved in some way or another, no matter your age or skillset.

The structure will be built with sustainable materials such as wood and cob with the help of CAPS and Corbett families! CAPS is very excited to be bringing the community together for the building of an outdoor classroom with cob benches! Our placemaking site will be in The Garden Space at The Springdale Elementary School, fondly know as CAPS(Corbett Arts Program w/Spanish) This is a great opportu

nity to come together as a community for a wonderful cause that will benefit the community for years to come. The main frame will be built by a professional contractor, however the cob bench seating can be built with the help of CAPS and Corbett Families. If you have ever had any interest in learning to build with this sustainable material, this is your chance to get your hands in the cob and help. There's also an element of bringing in recycled materials in the cob building part of it. Using eco bottles inside the cob and using hard plastic bottle caps and plastic jar lids and other hard plastic to inlay in the cob to make mosaic type pictures. We will also be using glass, mirrors, tiles and other esthetically appealing pieces to really make the art on the structure pop. I also envisioned some glass bottles along the top of the walls to let sunlight through in a pretty fashion. I'm asking the families of CAPS to collect these items from their homes to, one, keep them out of the landfill, and two, teach the families and children that there are alternatives for their trash, like using them in eco building projects or art projects. This is the fun part where we get to be creative! This is also a community building event. I really want to stress that everyone has something to offer, whether that be volunteering time, material or monetary donations, time with their hands(and feet mixing the cob), helping put together eco bottles, ideas, skilled expertise, a truck to help gather materials. Please let me know if you have something specific you’d like to help with! Everything is welcome and encouraged! My goals with this project are to bring the community together, provide a nice covered space outside for the students, raise awareness of sustainable building and other permaculture ideas, and raise awareness on ways we can limit our footprint on this planet. On this page you will find more information on how you can help. There is a specific material list of things you may have on your property just lying around waiting for a special purpose. If you find something you would like to donate, please send me a DM, email, phone call, or text. Or all! Service in the woods can be spotty 😊 All donations are tax deductible through the Springdale School Community Association’s Non-Profit. Any and all donations are helpful and greatly appreciated! Thank you for choosing to be a part of The CAPS Outdoor Classroom Cob Building Project! The dates are still TBD, but aiming for late this summer. Stay tuned!

Here's the materials list

• clay, sand, and straw
• Lots of urbanite, bricks, reclaimed concrete, miscellaneous stone, and natural stone
• bags of concrete
• sand, 3/4 minus gravel and paver stones to cover approximately a 12'×12' area for the flooring
• broken pottery, tile, mirrors, marbles, glass beads to inlay in the cob, alongside the bottle caps and other hard plastics. I think this will increase the esthetics
• 2 4'x8' sheets of plexiglass or equivalent to. If you have scraps, we can discuss specific dimensions needed.
• 8 LARGE cobble stones about 1.5'-2' in diameter
• 22 shaded Doug Fir about 5" in diameter at the base. These tends to be stronger than trees in full sun. Maybe your forested property needs some thinning? This helps with fire safety as well!
• An excavator and person willing to come excavate the site. About 16' in diameter and about a 2' drop. Sometime in the first couple weeks of June before June 15th.
• a chainsaw mill or portable saw mill we could borrow or someone who's willing to let us bring the trees we have to mill there if it's not portable.
• 30' or so of French Drain material (perforated 3" ABS or something) And a yard or so of 2" river rock for bottom of French Drain... TBD.
• 40' or so of 3/8" re-bar. Shorts OK. Also various dimensions can work, 1/2", 5/8" OK.
• I need a few people I can call on to help with gathering materials. If you have a truck and can lend a hand, that would be wonderful!
• If you have construction experience and want to be involved with this project we could use a couple extra hands. This is one of the few paid positions. We can discuss specifics.
