Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, we won't be joining Forging Community for the second weekend of Viking Fest Minnesota. However, we will still have plenty of forged goods there!

Swords were, throughout pre-modern history, among the pinnacles of metalworking in their respective cultures. Since the advent of the sword in the Bronze Age, they were used in refined and sophisticated ways, as has been impressively demonstrated by the research of the Bronze Age Combat Project. We no longer have to rely on speculation alone: scientific research provides evidence that swords were used in sophisticated ways requiring fine motor skills.
This is exactly what the ergonomic design of sword hilts suggests, regardless of period. Research into the subject indicates that the constraints of close combat and human anatomy have repeatedly given rise to refined fighting systems that required dedicated training.
The widespread idea of prehistoric and historical close combat as a brutish and largely instinct-driven affair is a modern misconception. This is not simply a matter of opinion, but a conclusion supported by experimental research, weapon design and use-wear evidence. Together, these findings allow us to gain a much more realistic understanding of combat and warfare in periods when such skills and expertise could be vital.
