Rain was falling softly over the small town when Ayan first saw Maya standing under a broken bus stop roof. She was trying to protect her sketchbook from the rain while laughing at her own struggle.
Ayan walked toward her and silently held his umbrella above her head.
“Thank you,” Maya said with a smile that instantly made his heart race.
From that day, they met almost every evening. Sometimes at the tea stall near the river, sometimes on the old bridge where the city lights reflected on the water. Maya loved drawing sunsets, and Ayan loved listening to her dreams.
One winter night, the electricity went out across the town. The streets became dark and quiet. Maya felt cold as they sat beside the river.

“What if one day we get separated?” Maya asked softly.
Ayan looked at her and replied, “Then I’ll find you again. In every city, every crowd, every lifetime.”
Years passed. Life became difficult. Ayan moved away for work, and distance slowly built silence between them. But every year on the same winter night, Maya still visited the river.
One evening, as rain began to fall again, someone stood beside her with an umbrella.
“You still forget to carry one,” Ayan said with a gentle smile.
Maya’s eyes filled with tears. “And you still come to save me.”
This time, he held her hand tightly and never let go again.
