A grand finale to a wonderful opportunity and great weekend! It was an honor and great privilege of mine to have represented Hope Gas in having created such a piece for the Mon Ball! The piece titled “Echoes of Blackwater Canyon” displays the unique diversity of wildlife that thrives in the fresh waters of Appalachia. Each of the replica mounts were tediously created and hand painted with acrylic paints and are inspired by memories from fellow sportsman and wildlife enthusiast’s sightings and catches. The piece features every species of trout found in West Virginia, as well as two species of native crayfish. The wood formation is a root base of a tree that was worn by the headwaters of the West Fork River.

Another hand painted replica mount complete and up for display, “Streams of Appalachia” was a success! The display features the four dominant trout species that call Appalachia home: Brown Trout, Native Brooke Trout, Golden Rainbow Trout, and Rainbow Trout. These replicas were all based on fish caught and released throughout Appalachia by close friends and family and the wood was locally sourced. Thanks to everyone that contributed photos and memories to help make these possible!

WV Brooke Trout are some of the most awe-inspiring creatures that Appalachia has to offer, I can only hope to capture the essence of these fish and do them some justice in these replicas. This was a beautiful catch by a good friend, I hope you enjoy your mount as much as I did creating it!

From tree to table and form to finish, this Native Brooke Trout Reproduction mount was completed over the weekend. The mount is hand painted, the pedestal base was made from a piece of persimmon that was milled last fall, it houses color changing led lighting. The quartz and fossils are a mix from North Carolina and West Virginia creeks and the fly was tied locally by my brother. Looking forward to doing more of these in the future!

Reproduction mounts are great for supporting conservation in streams. The only thing needed for an accurate and timeless mount are a few good photos and some minor measurements and the fish can be safely released back into its habitat to continue to grow and thrive.

There’s something to be said for these old forgotten logs! Maple certainly gets sweeter with time. After sitting for nearly two years, it was left for firewood, but this log had a few surprises left to share within its grain.

Made for a muddy mill, but this is Spalted Maple at its finest!

Giving a second life to old material is always rewarding. These WV’s are carefully carved from marble that was being destroyed and hauled to a landfill. The wood used is a combination of salvage from an old barn and a spalted maple log cut on the mill. A little bit of creativity and some polishing can go a long way!

Couldn’t have asked for a better fall. Out of respect for the wildlife here on the property, I don’t like to bring them down unless we have to, but it made some great framing for the shop and went to good use!

Milling by the moonlight! Some beautiful grain came out in these Persimmon slabs last night. Pretty impressive color variation in this tree. Fun fact, Persimmon is related to some ebony species, thus sometimes going by the nickname of “white ebony”.
Looking forward to getting into the remaining logs from this tree!

Poplar Boards are rough sawn and green.
