Solving the Mystery of Yankeetown Field school Solving the Mystery of Mississippian Origins

This Year’s Midwestern Archaeology Field School will be held in Lebanon, IL focusing on the Emerald mound center in the uplands surrounding Cahokia.This summer we investigate how and why these ancient people constructed their world, and to discover the secrets of religious practices in early Mississippian society. Last summer we found evidence that implicated Yankeetown people in the events at the Emerald Mound center, this year wee seek more of such evidence.

The Solving the Mystery of Yankeetown Field school is working with the University of Illinois field school at two mound centers in Illinois this summer. We are looking for Yankeetown Immigrants to the Cahokia region, and how they might have been involved in creating. Mississippian religion. To follow this summers investigations check out the facebook group "Revealing Cahokia's Religion".

With grant and permits in hand we are packing up field equipment getting ready to begin excavations at Ford Mound (the Pfeffer site) and at Emerald Mound. The fun begins in a week!

Excavation of a section of the house edge found a burned floor, two pits and a hearth. Fill contained only grog tempered sherds and several Yankeetown decorated rims.
