When the largest cable-supported domed football stadium in the world required a new color scheme for its exterior, the project called for a well-executed game plan by the project management company, the architect, general contractor and a team of coating professionals.

Coating the exterior of the Georgia Dome presented a challenge given the stadium’s close proximity to moving traffic, nearby parking and office buildings. In order to avoid damage from overspray, all coatings had to be applied by roller. The exterior skin of the dome consists of architectural concrete masonry units (CMUs) to a height of 12 feet, flat metal panels up to the low roof level at 97 feet and corrugated panels from the lower roof to the compression ring 55 feet above. The embossed metal had a textured galvanized surface originally finished with a Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) coil-coating. Working from 40-foot-wide stages, coating crews prepared both coated and uncoated substrates by washing them with a pre-paint cleaning chemical at a pressure of 3,000 psi and a temperature of 180 degrees F.

Metal panels were primed with Series 66 Hi-Build Epoxoline, a polyamide epoxy primer, followed by a topcoat of Series 1071 Fluoronar, a high-solids fluoropolymer polyurethane. A single coat of Fluoronar was specified, except on red panels where two coats were applied. Concrete surfaces received two coats of Series 156 Enviro-Crete, a breathable waterborne acrylate.

An ultra-durable finish, Fluoronar was chosen for its user-friendly application characteristics, outstanding color and gloss retention, and strong adhesion to aged coil-applied coatings. “We experienced no problems with this product even when a thunderstorm appeared and rained on a freshly coated surface. It was easy to apply, which saved us a lot of headaches,” recalled Charles Wagner, project estimator with Specialty Finishes, Inc., the project’s coating contractor.

Jeff Wierenga, AIA, project architect with the firm of Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback and Associates (TVS) acknowledged, “It was a very smooth-running operation from all sides and we were really pleased with how it turned out.”

IS WATER INTRUSION A PROBLEM FOR YOU?

Stopped by the Botanical Gardens today to see a paint job from November of 2005.
Moisture may be life-giving for plants, but it can cause serious damage to buildings as the owners of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens discovered. An exposed second-story walkway had allowed moisture to infiltrate behind the façade of the north and east wing of the Garden’s primary building for years, causing extensive damage to the stucco.
The architectural firm NHB Group was hired to address the moisture problems and quickly addressed the primary cause by redesigning the elevated walkways. However, areas of the stucco were badly damaged and required removal and replacement with fresh material. Architect and project manager Hugh Outzen needed to coat the stucco with a product that would both protect it from the wind-driven rains common to the region and also have good moisture v***r transmission (MVT) capabilities that would allow the substrate to “breathe.”
Mr. Outzen selected Tnemec’s Series 156 Enviro-Crete for its ability to protect the façade from water infiltration while allowing any trapped moisture to pass through the film. Series 156, a modified waterborne acrylate, is a high-performance exterior coating designed for masonry and concrete substrates. It is able to handle extreme thermal cycling, and has very good color and gloss retention, ensuring aesthetic appeal along with performance.
Howard Painting roller-applied two coats of Series 156 to new and existing stucco after it was prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP13. In all, over 100 gallons of Enviro-Crete were applied.
With the moisture problems addressed and the long-term protection afforded by Enviro-Crete, the Botanical Gardens can concentrate on keeping the water where it does the most good, on the plants.

The University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium is nationally known as an intimidating place for visiting football teams to play. Since the stadium’s completion in 1929, the university’s football team has developed a phenomenal winning tradition resulting in as loyal a fan base as can be found in college sports.

This popularity brought with it a huge demand for extra capacity, so the university broke ground in 2006 on additional enhancements that included more skyboxes and a north end-zone addition that would add over 8,000 new seats, bringing total capacity to 92,138.

The old seats’ factory finish had weathered nearly 20 years of intense sun, leaving the once bright red faded and chalked. Tnemec’s Series 1070 Fluoronar, an advanced fluoropolymer topcoat, was selected for its exceptional color and gloss retention. Able to withstand ultra-violet light that can damage other coatings and cause them to fade, Fluoronar retains its color and gloss for many years and easily outperforms even the best polyurethanes.

The section of approximately 2,000 seat frames was first power tool cleaned in accordance with SSPC-SP3 and then primed with a spray-applied coat of Series 135 Chembuild, a modified polyamidoamine epoxy with exceptional adhesion characteristics, followed by a coat of Series 1070 Fluoronar in Crimson Tide Red. The need for a color-fast coating didn’t stop in the stands. The observation towers at the team’s practice field – and even the blocking sleds – received the same system.

The renovation project also addressed the concourses in the lower bowl where a Tnemec flooring system was applied to a 70,000 sq ft area. Series 237 PowerTread, a multi-purpose polyamine epoxy, was applied by double broadcast to a thickness of 1/8”. This impact and abrasion resistant floor topping was then coated with Series 280 Tneme-Glaze, a durable polyamine epoxy that seals and smoothes the surface. A coat of Series 291 CRU, a polyester polyurethane, was then applied for increased resistance to abrasion and staining.

With a newly refurbished stadium and a fresh coat of paint, Bryant-Denny Stadium will surely continue the colorful tradition of Alabama football.

The city of Camden may be the county seat of Wilcox County, Alabama, but the city is really known as a mecca for all things hunting, fishing and outdoors. In 2019, the town and the tourism board decided to coat its two water tanks with similar designs to showcase its best-known attractions. The fish, buck, turkey and accompanying logo that adorns the tank exterior were painted using Series 700 HydroFlon, formulated to limit UV light degradation and retain color and gloss levels.
