Rebuild Oak Hill

Rebuild Oak Hill Historical Archive of the horrific flooding that destroyed the Oak Hill baseball and softball fields Please consider helping in whatever way you can.

On Sunday, October 13, an historic rain event in southwest Austin caused extensive flood damage to an equally historic institution. Established in 1967, OHYSA (or Oak Hill as most know it) has been teaching baseball, softball, teamwork, participation and leadership to generation of Austinites. The damage to our fields is extensive, and it will take thousands of volunteer hours, and donations of equipment and money to get us back on track. Even if it's only to spread the word.

Hey folks! Thanks for checking in and keeping this page active. We will keep this page up and functioning in the event that future flooding occurs. We have high hopes that the Oak Hill Parkway project's flooding intervention plans (detention and retention ponds and a "riverwalk" type plan for the creek) will help. In the meantime, we encourage anyone that wants to keep up with OHYSA generally (and not just for the highs and lows of major infrastructure projects!!) to visit our "regular" page - www.facebook.com/oakhillhysa True story - we couldn't score the shortcut OHYSA on FB because there's a guy in Albania named O. Hysa using it! As always, thanks for all of your support and love!

I know many people are wondering! No, the Halloween floods of 2015 did NOT cause any damage to the fields! There is a minimal amount of damage to the parking lot, but the fields are up and running in time for Fall End of Season tournament, which begins tonight. Thank you all for your concern and questions!!

Sunday September 21st, we will be having a cleanup day beginning at 12:00pm. We ask for as many hands as possible, parent and player, volunteer an hour or two of the day to get fields cleaned an operational.

The majority of the work will involve trash and debris cleanup, and clearing rocks from outfields.

We ask that you bring any of the following. Please mark your equipment with your name or identifying tape.

work gloves
shovels
rakes
wheelbarrows or buckets
chainsaws and blades
gas powered blowers

What field you work on is dependent on need. There will be ants and mosquitos. Plan accordingly. Water and light snacks provided.

Please try and make this work day - it would have been a day you would have been playing regardless.

Thanks as always for your support.

We're getting a lot of questions about "how could this have happened again" - we don't have all the answers, but are pretty sure the flooding is directly related to lack of creek upkeep along Williamson from just upstream of 290 to just under the Joe Tanner Bridge, as well as continued construction along 290. Debris has never been removed since last year's flooding from any part of the creek bed. We would encourage anyone interested enough to go to the city website and submit a service request for either creek drainage of Williamson creek at Joe Tanner & McCarty Lane, or bridge maintenance at 6301 Joe Tanner Lane. You can make this request anonymously, or leave your contact information. Please make your request respectfully and succinctly. Three times in the span of 11 months (10/13/13, 10/31/13 and 9/18/14) after decades without flooding cannot simply be attributable to "mother nature." https://austin-p1csrprodcwi.motorolasolutions.com/ServiceRequest.mvc/SRIntakeStep2?id=DRCHANEL&templateid=&guid=441bcc1c95b948b7967b5bbafbb56459&srID=371279472

OHYSA Families:

Due to heavy rains experienced last night, and with more expected the rest of the week, our fields and facilities are currently closed, and all games and practices scheduled through September 25, 2014 are canceled.

The bad news is that the storm brought damage to some of our fields, parking lot and the annex area on the softball side of the complex. Those affected fields will need removal of dirt and gravel in the outfield and work on infield dirt. The level of work needed varies field by field, with some needing more work than others.

The good news is we have seen destruction before. This is NOT destruction. We know what we need to do to fix this damage, which is not as extensive or devastating as what we experienced last year.

The Board of Directors is moving quickly to access contractors and crews to the facility as soon as their schedules permit.

This is what we do not need from our community:
We do not need donations (although none will be rejected).
We do not need condolences.
We do not need urgent pleas of panic or desperation.

This is what we do need from our community:
We need your help to respond when called.
We need all hands on deck to clean up debris, and remove rocks and gravel from fields.
We need all the usage of heavy machinery as possible - if you have access to bobcats or similar please email [email protected] to let us know.

Last year's devastation trained us well and thankfully we know, that by responding together as a league, we can move quickly and get back on the fields THIS season.

Notice will be provided soon on field work days and specific ways YOU and YOUR teams can help.

Let's show all of Austin how the spirit and strength of Oak Hill continues to prosper and that we will never, ever give up on our league and our kids.
