Permit Karma - Editorial Update: 082525 - Since this editorial was written several years ago, approximately 45% of our Architectural Design and Engineering Projects come from clients who have hired unscrupulous contractors who have conned their client into a shady contract and assured them that they didnโt need a building permit. The local jurisdictions respectively โred-taggedโ (shut their project down until permit is issued) these projects, and the contractors became ghosts to the client, leaving the client holding the bagโฆ Shameful practice, but it existsโฆ Do your โDue Diligenceโ folks!

Permit Karma is a bitch...
If you aren't permitting your project, you are only hurting your customer down the road, as well as damaging your own reputation.
It comes around, full circle, every single time! We have cleaned up three unscrupulous contractor's messes this year for our clients so far. I'm not talking about poor workmanship, I'm talking about them building un-permitted additions and structures of which the homeowners either have to get them approved prior to building something else, or they get held up when trying to sell their property. All because a builder (or homeowner) made a poor choice.
I understand that there are customers who will not want to go through the process, but it should be our responsibility to educate them as to how and why the permitting process protects them as well as their contractor. It literally takes 2 minutes.
Does it cost more? Yes.
Does it drive up the timeline? Yes
All factors for the homeowner to ponder. But to just carte blanche tell them that a permit is not required so you can close a quick sale?
Austin is so much better than this...
Love y'all, Peace!
