In 2009, International Speedway Corporation, now part of NASCAR, assembled their pavement team, including AMS, at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal to address severe raveling in eight of the turns. Two lifts were placed and the joints treated with Track Bond. You can still see the patches as the slightly darker areas during the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix!

Stone matrix asphalt or SMA is a durable, rut resistant mix for high-traffic pavements. Originally developed in Europe, SMA was introduced to the U.S. in the 1990's. While there is an initial learning curve for Contractors, SMA offers longer life and higher macrotexture compared to dense-graded mixtures. Higher macrotexture aids in wet weather friction. Start of a new project!

Excited to be using our new 4540 EGauge! We’ve long relied on a Troxler 4640-B, thin-lift gauge for measuring density of asphalt pavements. The EGauge expands our capabilities and can be transported anywhere in the country without licensing.

What did you do Saturday morning? Assess subgrade support with a dynamic cone penetrometer according to ASTM D6951? Measure pavement texture and friction with ASTM E1845 and ASTM E303, respectively? AMS has the tools and expertise.

Subgrade support is a critical element of flexible pavement design. This site had variable subgrade soils, some with low California Bearimg Ratio (CBR). Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing according to ASTM D6951 allows widespread, rapid assessment of subgrade support. This proved to be an economical method of ensuring performance without over designing the pavement for this project.

AMS is proud to have assisted Banks Construction in their work at the Leatherman Terminal; confirming pavement sections, revising specifications, designing asphalt mixtures, evaluating mixture options with performance tests and providing initial construction support.

Construction of SC Ports’ Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal is progressing toward a March 2021 opening, marking the country’s first container terminal to open since 2009.
