Varsity Football - Wayzata vs. Andover

The Andover Huskies kicked off this season on Thursday against the visiting Wayzata Trojans.

It was a bit of a slow start for both teams, with the first score coming on a safety by the Trojans midway through the first quarter. The Huskies offense finally got rolling late in the first quarter, with QB Jackson Kirchner connecting with Tristen Chenowith on a 60 yard touchdown. The Huskies second touchdown was punched in by junior RB Greyson Bruneau on a 24 yard run that left a trail of Wayzata defenders in his wake.

The ultimate separation in this game came at the end of the second quarter, when the Trojans scored two touchdowns in the last two minutes to increase a 16-12 lead into a 30-12 halftime score.

Even though Kirchner was able to find the end zone twice in the third quarter, once to Chenowith, and the other on a highlight reel type catch by sophomore tight end Kieran Rundquist, the Trojans effectively started running out the clock each time they had the ball. A fourth quarter fumble recovery by Andover senior LB Peyton Verheyen provided a shimmer of hope for the Huskies, but Wayzata defense held steady, and kept the Huskies out of the endzone the entire fourth quarter. Final score, Wayzata 37 - Andover 26

The Huskies travel to Champlin Park on Friday, for a Metro-North showdown that will most certainly carry seeding implications at the end of the season. Game kicks off at 7pm....go see it!

Andover Huskies Football had their annual Kick-Off Night festivities last week. Several vendors were on hand, as Several hundred youth football players joined the high school program to celebrate the start of their seasons. Over 250 kids out this year for flag football alone! Was great to see old faces, and many new faces as well. Looking forward to a fun football season!

Hometown Hockey Minnesota kicked off their fall mite league last week. The league is made up four teams of skaters from several local hockey associations. They'll be skating every Tuesday in September at Andover Community Center, with Semifinals, and third-place/championship games at the end of the month. I'll be catching them at least a couple more times. Come on out, and check out some future hockey legends!
