------- Government of Uganda and UNDP host High Level Dialogue on Biodiversity Financing in Uganda -------

The BIOFIN project seeks to address the biodiversity finance challenge in a comprehensive and systematic manner with an aim of enabling government to construct a sound business case for increasing investment in the sustainable and equitable management, protection, and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems.

One of the biggest challenges in Agriculture is weather. Uganda has experience epidemics in the last 5 years; it is safe to predict that every five years we have a disaster of some kind. Some of these are attributed to our usage of natural resources including land, vegetation and water resources. Central in the management of these resources is NEMA - National Environment Management Authority. NEMA is mandated to conserve biodiversity in Uganda; something which remains key for inclusive development as Uganda.
Tomorrow Tuesday May 30th, 2017 at Serena Hotel in Kampala, NEMA with UNDP Uganda will host a discussion themed “Catalyzing increased financing for Biodiversity conservation in Uganda”.

“We are stuck with about 40 million seedlings valued at Shs18b since each seedling costs Shs450 because the district chief administrative officer has refused to constitute a verification team so that we can get paid. We are now counting losses of about Shs9bn because most of the seedlings have dried up since farmers have no money to buy agro inputs to spray them and even paying workers to remove grass from the tea gardens,” Byaruhanga said.

What distinguishes organic farming from conventional farming?
Organic farming respects the environment. Anything destructive, like chemical pesticides and fertilisers, is not encouraged, so the soil remains sustainable for generations.
Soil is important because it is the foundation of any farming system. It is a living thing. Chemical fertilisers used in conventional farming are petroleum-based, and when applied, kill the micro-organisms which maintain soil fertility. If the micro-organisms are dead, how is the chemical fertiliser supposed to increase crop yields?
