🔩 Some steel connections are difficult not because they are visually complex, but because their real behaviour is not easy to confirm by hand.
In one of our projects, Steel Warehouse in Iceland, our engineering team worked on a rigid beam-to-column connection for a frame structure designed with seismic loads taken into account. 🌍
The key challenge was not only checking the strength of the plates, bolts and welds. The more important question was whether the connection actually behaved as a rigid joint, as assumed in the global structural model, or whether in reality it should be treated as semi-rigid.
📐 This is where manual verification becomes extremely limited. Correctly evaluating joint stiffness and local plastic deformations in such a connection is not something that can be done reliably with simple hand calculations.
Using IDEA StatiCa, our engineers were able to analyse the connection behaviour in detail, check the main components, and verify that the adopted design assumptions were consistent with the actual performance of the joint. 💻
