Who’s Profile is this? Probably not only smallholder farmers, because the followings tell more than that.

1. They play a crucial role in global food security and rural development - providing over 80% of the food consumed.

2. Most of them live in remote villages/areas

3. Geographically scattered, this makes it difficult for buyers to source produce from them

4. Limited access to modern farming technology, service and information

5. Credit and financing, limited access to credit and financial services, which hamper their ability to invest in improved farming techniques and inputs.

6. Profit margin is increasingly being squeezed because of the involvement of multiple intermediaries and middlemen in the agricultural value chain.

7. Relying mainly on family labor for agricultural production

8. Family size, often have larger families with multiple generations living and working together

9. Education, generally have lower levels of formal education compared to urban populations.

10. Land size, operate on small plots of land less the two hectares.

11. Crops, grow a variety of crops, often focusing on subsistence farming to meet family’s food needs, though some also grow cash crops for market sale.

12. Livestock, they also keep livestock such as chickens, goats, cattle which provide additional food and income.

13. Income, typically have low and irregular incomes, heavily dependent on seasonal agricultural production.
