Choosing storage capacity is not only about how much data you have today. You also need to consider future projects, backup requirements, and long-term growth.

Start by reviewing:
・Your current storage usage
・How much new media and project data you create each month
・Whether original files and multiple versions must be retained
・The usable capacity after RAID configuration
・Additional space needed for backup and future expansion

If you only plan around your current data size, you may run out of space sooner than expected.
A better approach is to estimate your needs for the next one to three years and leave room for growth.

The best capacity is not always the largest one. It is the one that fits your workflow, budget, and future plans.

選擇儲存容量時，不只要看目前有多少資料，也要考慮未來的工作量與備份需求。

可以先從以下幾個方向評估：
・目前已使用的資料容量
・每月新增多少照片、影片或專案檔案
・是否需要保留原始素材與多個版本
・RAID 設定後的實際可用容量
・是否需要額外預留備份與未來擴充空間

如果只按照現在的資料量選擇，很可能很快就會遇到容量不足。比較實際的做法，是預估未來一到三年的使用需求，並保留適當的成長空間。

容量不是越大越好，而是要符合你的工作流程、預算與未來規劃。

Many people know they should back up their data, but are not sure where to begin.
The simplest first step is to create a second copy. Save your important photos, videos, project files, and work data on a separate storage device instead of keeping everything on one computer or drive.

Then, gradually build a more reliable backup routine:
1. Identify the files you cannot afford to lose
2. Copy them to a separate storage device
3. Update the backup regularly
4. Check occasionally that the files can still be opened

Backup does not need to be complicated from the beginning. Start with a second copy, then improve your protection workflow as your data and storage needs grow.
Don’t wait until your data is lost to start backing it up.

很多人知道資料需要備份，卻不知道第一步該怎麼做。
最簡單的開始方式，就是先建立第二份副本。將重要的照片、影片、工作檔案或專案資料，複製到另一個獨立的儲存裝置，避免所有資料只存在同一台電腦或同一顆硬碟裡。

接著可以逐步建立更完整的備份習慣：
1. 找出不能遺失的重要資料
2. 儲存到另一個獨立裝置
3. 定期更新備份內容
4. 偶爾確認檔案是否可以正常開啟

備份不需要一次做到很複雜。先從第二份副本開始，再依照資料量與工作需求，逐步建立更安全、可靠的保護流程。
別等到資料遺失，才開始重視備份。

RAID combines multiple drives into one storage system and can be configured to improve performance, capacity efficiency, or fault tolerance.
Some RAID configurations allow the system to continue operating after a drive failure, reducing the risk of immediate workflow interruption.
However, RAID is not the same as backup.

RAID is designed to improve system availability and fault tolerance. Backup keeps a separate copy that can be used to restore lost or damaged data.
RAID and backup should work together, not replace one another.

RAID 是將多顆硬碟組合使用的儲存方式，可依照不同設定提升效能、容量利用率或容錯能力。
例如，部分 RAID 架構能在單顆硬碟故障時，讓系統繼續運作，降低工作立即中斷的風險。
但 RAID 並不等於備份。

RAID 的主要作用，是提升儲存系統的可用性與容錯能力；備份則是在原始資料之外，保留另一份可以復原的副本。
兩者應該搭配使用，而不是互相取代。

Different workflows require different storage architectures.
Understanding the differences between DAS, NAS, and SAN is the first step toward choosing the right storage solution.

DAS connects directly to a computer and is ideal for individual creators and high-speed workflows.
NAS provides file access over a network, making it suitable for general team sharing and everyday data management.
SAN delivers centralized, high-performance storage for collaborative editing, post-production, and larger professional workflows.

There is no single storage architecture that fits every workflow. The most important thing is to find the solution that best meets your needs.

How Should You Back Up Footage on Location?

Finishing a shoot does not mean the job is done. Protecting the footage is the next critical step.
When working on location, keep at least two independent copies and verify that the files have been transferred correctly.

One copy can remain on the original memory card, while another is stored on a portable storage device. After returning to the studio, transfer the footage to your primary storage or backup system.

Do not rely on a single drive. A clear backup workflow helps reduce the risk of losing valuable footage.

外出拍攝後，素材應該怎麼備份？
拍攝完成不代表工作結束，素材安全才是下一個重要步驟。

建議在外出拍攝時，至少保留兩份獨立備份，並在複製完成後確認檔案是否完整。
可以將一份素材保留在原始記憶卡，另一份複製到可攜式儲存設備；回到工作室後，再同步至主要儲存或備份系統。

不要只依賴單一硬碟。建立清楚的備份流程，才能降低素材遺失的風險。
