Thick or Thin: Should We All Stop Using Thin Oils?

1. GM Engine Failures - Over 28,000 L87 V8 engines failed due to manufacturing defects in crankshafts and bearings, triggering a massive recall.

2. GM's Solution - Two fixes: replace defective engines or switch from 0W-20 to thicker 0W-40 oil to reduce wear in problematic engines.

Can you use a thicker oil than what your manual calls for?

TL:DR - You can use a different oil weight than what your manual calls for without damaging your engine, in most cases, but just because you can doesn't mean you should. A thicker engine oil can cause your engine to run hotter, reduce it's lifespan and can even cause oil delivery problems in some engines. But can also provide better protection, in some cases, than a thinner oil.

That decision should be driven by data and not assumption or speculation. You should NOT use a thicker oil if the oil it's already using is adequately protecting your engine!
