Ülkemizde yapısal çelik malzemeleri kullanımı endüstriyel ve ticari hizmet binaları başta olmak üzere ulaşım ve tarım sektöründe, konut sektöründe hızla yaygınlaşmaktadır. 18.yüzyılda yüksek fırın yönte
miyle ham demir ve font (pik) üretiminin başlamasından sonra demir ve çelik yapı malzemesi olarak kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Çelik malzeme kullanılarak inşa edilen ilk mühendislik yapıları köprülerdir.
20. yüzyılın başlarından itibaren kaynaklı birleşimler ilk önce yüksek yapılarda (çelik karkas yapılar, hal yapıları) kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. 1945’li yıllarda kaynaklı birleşimlerin köprülerde kullanılmaya başlanmasıyla bu günkü modern çelik konstrüksiyon anlayışı ortaya çıkmıştır.
