Nigeria LNG Ltd. is targeting late 2027 to start operations at its $10 billion Train 7 expansion on Bonny Island, as Africa’s top exporter moves to lift capacity amid shifting global energy trade flows.

Managing Director Adeleye Falade revealed the timeline at the Gastech conference in Bangkok, noting the project will raise annual production capacity from 22 million to 30 million metric tons.

Global buyers are stepping up interest in spot cargoes and diversified volumes following disruptions across key supply corridors like the Strait of Hormuz. However, domestic feed-gas deficits remain the central hurdle.

The facility continues to operate under a force majeure declared during the 2022 floods. NLNG is running at 82% to 83% utilization and must bridge an operational gap to reach 90% before lifting the declaration.

NLNG—a joint venture between NNPC, Shell, TotalEnergies, and Eni—is working alongside government partners to resolve the upstream supply bottleneck and secure vital feed gas ahead of the late-2027 startup.
