It is truly humbling to reflect on how our parents’ generation of veterans endured hardship and sacrificed so much so that today we can live in freedom.
They spent long periods in the mountains, facing extremely difficult conditions — rain, wind, hunger and suffering. Yet, despite all the difficulties they faced, they remained strong and stood firm with one single objective: to see Timor-Leste become a free nation.
Their sacrifice brought so much to us. They gave us the freedom to speak, to take control of our own destiny, and gave a new generation of Timorese the opportunity to travel around the world, seek knowledge, gain experience and pursue work, as well as access various opportunities in the international community — opportunities that were once extremely difficult to obtain.
Today, we are truly honoured and proud to welcome Colonel Domingos da Camara “AMICO” to our office. His presence reminds us that nation-building is not only about recognising the journey our veterans undertook in the past to achieve Independence. The challenge of building our nation today continues, but it takes a different form.
Our responsibility today is to use the freedom and knowledge that they have passed on to us to further strengthen our capabilities and contribute to a better Timor-Leste.
At UGG, we are proud to contribute in our own way — by creating opportunities, building and strengthening the capabilities of Timorese people, strengthening local industry, and demonstrating that Timorese people themselves have the capacity to build and develop our own nation.
We are also proud to contribute to the restoration of “Kaixa Inglaterra” in Kailara, Baucau. This site once served as an important location for logistics and support for FALINTIL Region II Baucau, which was led by the late Vice Chief of Staff, great Commander David Alex Daitula.
All of this history and sacrifice places a responsibility on all of us. The freedom we have inherited from their struggle should inspire us to continue working, building, and creating a better future for the generations to come.
