Mapping of Soil Liquefaction Induced by the 2025 7.8 Sagaing Earthquake in Myanmar Using High‐Spatial‐Resolution Images

Manually interpreting high-resolution remote sensing imagery—using your eyes—is a common way to study secondary hazards associated with surface rupture. This is especially true for difficult-to-access regions in which fieldwork isn’t easy to conduct.

In a new paper, a team from the China Earthquake Administration looked at remote sensing imagery to interpret coseismic soil liquefaction from the 2025 magnitude 7.8 Sagaing earthquake in Myanmar. Following the event, they identified more than 10,000 soil liquid faction pits in the central Myanmar basin. They found dense liquefaction located on lower terraces of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River and related tributaries.
