LMI LUSES LUSES « Dynamic of Land Use changes and and Soil Ecosystem Services » which associates French (CIRAD) and 7 South-East Asian partners

The speed of land use changes in South-East Asia, and particularly the “cash crop” intensification, has important consequences on the soil environment. Following this statement IRD (IRD – Research Institute for Development) has decided to launch an international joint laboratory entitled LUSES for « Dynamic of Land Use changes and Soil Ecosystem Services » which associates French (CIRAD) and 7 Sou

th-East Asian partners. The force of the LMI LUSES is rooted in its regional scale actions. What is a LMI : an international joint laboratory or LMI is an operating research organization whose objective is to jointly design and conduct research and training programs around well defined and mutually agreed scientific goals, through the sharing of facilities, equipment and skills. The LMI will have a regional scale and international influence and will promote the hosting of scientific partners. Scientific Objectives : to create and then consolidate a regional scale program on the environmental impact of agriculture on soil functions link to ecosystem services (nutrient cycling, preservation of soil functional diversity, C sequestration, water cycle and erosion).

The objective of this meeting was (i) to make a final statement of all the scientific projects and capacity building initiatives (link to fact sheet)) such as the LUSES-LDD international platform of biology and the SEALNET network (South East Asia Laboratory Network) (ii) to establish the main guidelines of the future project LUSES 2.

During the meeting, all the Asian scientists underlines that the LMI LUSES project was found fruitful with an overall very positive appreciation of all the partners’ institutions

From 23rd to 25th February 2016, a training course on «Characterization of the physiological profiles of the
soil microbial community» was organized by the LMI LUSES and Land Development Department (LDD) at
the Division of Soil biotechnology of LDD in Thailand.

The training last 3 days, the first day was devoted to the theoretical aspect of techniques for assessing the
soil activities, the two others days was devoted to measurements and analyses of the data produced.
