Artificial Intelligence: Between Optimism and Concerns
A Division of Opinions
At present, people are divided into two groups regarding artificial intelligence:
The first group welcomes the idea and believes that AI will greatly contribute to making daily life easier, whether in work, education, or even entertainment.
The second group is cautious about using it in the way promoted by the first group, as they focus on the potential risks of AI in the distant future.
An Example from Daily Life
This debate may seem theoretical, but there is an example that everyone experiences in daily life.
Imagine you are thinking about a match between Real Madrid and Barcelona, and shortly afterward, while scrolling through social media, you see an ad or a video about football—even if it’s not the exact match you had in mind.
You then ask yourself: How did Facebook or TikTok know that I was interested in this specific content?
The answer has nothing to do with magic or the platforms’ ability to read minds. Instead, it lies in how AI-powered algorithms work.
These algorithms continuously monitor your digital behavior: what you like, what you share, how long you watch each video, the pages you visit, and even the times you use the app.
Over time, they learn your patterns of interest through machine learning, then build a personalized digital profile for you that includes your habits, interests, and sometimes even your mood.
This is why it feels as though the platform is reading your mind, when in reality, it is collecting precise digital signals and turning them into predictions about what might capture your attention next.
From Tracking Interests to the Microphone Debate
Here arises the controversial question: Do these platforms rely only on tracking digital behavior, or could they actually be listening to what we say through the microphone?
Major companies such as Meta (Facebook) and TikTok strongly deny the idea of eavesdropping, insisting that everything is based solely on the power of big data analysis and user behavior.
Yet, despite these explanations, doubt remains for many people, as it is hard for the average user to believe that just a “click” or a “glance” is enough to explain the uncanny accuracy of such recommendations.
