GROUND TRUTHS #5 · Abigail, BD at GeoSpecs

"We'll just take the cheaper plan. There is not much of a difference because we just need the data."

Two soil investigation quotes can look identical, but bring completely different results.

The borehole depths, the sampling, the lab tests, and - most of all -
the professional who reads the results and what they can advise you afterwards. A log
is just numbers until someone with experience tells you what they mean
for your foundation.

You may get data, but you may lose valuable insights if you skip the interpretation.

"It's just soft soil. Can't we dig it out or replace it?”

Imagine standing on:
Concrete floor - you don't sink at all.
Memory foam - you sink a little, then stop.
A soaked sponge - you sink deeper slowly as the water is squeezed out.

In Singapore, soft marine clay behaves much like a soaked sponge. Put a building on it, and the ground doesn't settle all at once. It continues to compress over time as water slowly escapes from the clay.

The soil doesn't care about your timeline. It settles on its own schedule.

"What you see on the surface isn't always what's happening underground." - Abigail, BD at GeoSpecs.

In construction, one of the biggest misconceptions is that soil investigation is only needed for large or complex projects. Another is that if the surface looks stable, the ground below must be stable too.
The reality is very different.

Soil investigation helps uncover critical ground conditions that directly affect foundation design, construction planning, safety, and long-term cost control.

It helps engineers understand:
✅ How strong the ground is
✅ Whether the ground conditions vary across the site
✅ Groundwater levels and conditions
✅ Potential settlement risks
✅ The most suitable foundation solution

A borehole is not just a formality. It is a way to reduce uncertainty before major design and construction decisions are made.

Skipping soil investigation may seem like a cost-saving decision at the start. But when hidden ground risks appear later, the cost of correction can be much higher.

At GeoSpecs, we support projects with reliable soil investigation insights to help engineers, developers, contractors, and project teams make better-informed decisions from the ground up.
Because in construction, what lies beneath matters just as much as what you build above.

GROUND TRUTHS #3 · Abigail, BP at GeoSpecs

"Do we really need so many boreholes?" It's a question we hear quite often.

After all, every borehole adds to the project cost. But when it comes to soil investigation, the goal is not to have the fewest boreholes. The goal is to have enough information to understand the ground conditions properly.

If there isn't enough ground data, engineers have to make assumptions.

Some may choose a more conservative foundation design, which can increase construction costs.
Others may discover unexpected ground conditions during construction, leading to delays, additional work, and higher costs.

In many cases, reducing the scope of investigation doesn't remove the cost. It simply moves the cost to a later stage of the project, where it is often more expensive and more disruptive.

A few more boreholes today can help avoid costly surprises tomorrow.

GROUND TRUTHS #2 · Abigail, BD at GeoSpecs

"The site next door already has borehole data. Can't we just use that?"

It's a fair question. Drilling costs money; reusing data sounds like a saving.

In Singapore, it usually isn't.

Over the years, we've seen soil conditions change significantly within a very short distance, even within metres. I've stood on a plot sitting on stiff Old Alluvium and watched the very next borehole drop into soft marine clay, tens of metres deep. Same street. Different world underground.

Borrowed data isn't a saving. It is ultimately an assumption about what lies beneath your site. And when it comes to foundation design and construction planning, assumptions can be expensive.

If the ground next door were a reliable guide to yours, we wouldn't need the trade at all.
