EP 5: Understanding Battery Capacity

Before we officially introduce our 5th Generation JIV battery, let’s first take a look at the capacity of a 7.2V NiMH battery. Many of you may have come across battery capacity ratings while browsing the internet, as advertisers often highlight this specification. Typically, battery capacity is measured in units like AH (Ampere Hours) or mAH (milliampere hours).

But what does this mean? For example, a 6AH battery indicates that it can provide 6 Amps of current for 1 hour. In other words, if you continuously draw 6A of power from a fully charged battery, it will last for 1 hour before being fully discharged.

This concept also applies when using aftermarket software, like Dr. Prius, to test the condition of your hybrid battery through the OBD2 port. The software generally asks you to charge the battery to 70-75% of its capacity, aiming to maintain the discharge current around 6A, which is within the ideal "green" range. The battery is then used until it reaches 39.5-40% before the engine kicks in. The time it takes to reach that point is used to estimate the lifespan of your hybrid battery pack. While this method isn't entirely precise, it’s based on sound theory.

The number of electrodes does not directly relate to the battery's capacity. However, with more electrodes, the battery will have lower internal resistance compared to one with fewer electrodes, assuming the same materials are used for the electrodes.

How to Accurately Test Your 7.2V NiMH Battery Capacity

A common method to accurately test your 7.2V NiMH battery capacity is to fully charge the battery and then discharge it at a rate of 1C. This will give you a clear reading of the capacity being discharged.

However, be cautious—some vendors sell battery testing equipment without proper knowledge of NiMH batteries. In some cases, they offer lithium battery chargers for testing NiMH batteries, which can actually damage the battery. Others sell testers that can’t even perform proper 1C charging and discharging.

If you’d like to learn more about NiMH battery testing and repair equipment, I’d be happy to offer honest advice. You don’t need to purchase from us—our equipment is among the highest priced in the market, and there are more affordable options that can do the same job.

Manufacturing of the 3rd generation prismatic steel NiMH 7.2V battery is set to begin in March 2024. This generation is produced by a different factory from the 1st, 2nd, and 4th generations, featuring a new factory and a brand-new design. It's important to note that JIV Battery is not the local distributor for the 3rd generation—anyone can purchase directly from the factory.

If you need the direct contact information, I’m more than happy to share it. I simply hope for fair competition in our region, allowing for more benefits to the end users.

Additionally, for the Malaysian market, the 3rd generation steel prismatic battery will not be available in blue casing. Instead, we will supply a grey casing version for those interested. This battery comes with a 3-year or 100,000 km standard factory warranty for added peace of mind.

The increased number of electrode plates results in lower internal resistance, which enhances efficiency and reliability. Achieving this involves a complex production process and advanced technology, rather than simply adding a layer or two.

We guarantee that each JIV battery supplied in a blue casing meets the highest quality standards directly from the factory. We do not use 2nd generation internals for our 4th generation batteries to cut costs.

EP 3. 1st & 2nd Generation Aftermarket Steel Prismatic 7.2V NiMH Hybrid Battery Casing in Different colors

Technically speaking, the first generation of Steel Prismatic hybrid batteries wasn't available on the market when it was developed in 2018. Instead, the initial batch was sent out from the factory for road testing. We equipped the first (or possibly second) set of 28-piece, 7.2V batteries into a Singapore-registered Toyota Prius. Similarly, the first set of 9.6V batteries was installed in a Singapore-registered Lexus RX400h. I can confidently confirm this, as the second serial-numbered battery, which was found defective, is still kept in my battery testing lab. Unlike the current models, which have serial numbers engraved directly onto the battery, this first batch had labels affixed instead. However, let's turn our focus to the first and second generations of these batteries that were actually released to the market.

Photo 1: The first generation of Steel Prismatic 7.2V NiMH batteries began selling in the market in 2019. As shown, the gray casing lacks a hole for the temperature sensor to be inserted. During installation, the car's original temperature sensor was secured to the casing with a cable tie. We closely monitored the battery's performance during driving and reported back to the factory. Our feedback highlighted a concern: if the temperature sensor is obstructed by the plastic casing, the Battery Management System (BMS) might not accurately detect the battery's temperature, potentially leading to battery damage due to overheating. During this period, no other color casing was produced, as other hybrid battery exporters and online marketing companies were still focused on the lower-cost cylindrical battery.

Starting from this generation, around 2021, cylindrical batteries began to encounter issues in warm climates. As a result, several battery exporters and online marketing companies gradually transitioned from cylindrical to steel prismatic batteries due to the high number of warranty claims.

We are the official sole distributor for the Singapore and Malaysia markets, but unfortunately, some batteries were still imported into Malaysia through parallel imports. I believe some local workshops imported and sold these batteries in the Malaysian market and are now facing warranty claim issues with exporters based in China. However, if you’re currently dealing with warranty claims—regardless of the casing color or where you purchased the battery—you can always reach out to JIV Battery. As the Steel Prismatic battery sole distributor from the battery factory, I am confident that I can resolve your warranty claim issues, provided they aren’t due to human error from incorrect installation.

During this period, some lower-capacity steel prismatic batteries were also manufactured to meet the low-cost demands of certain exporters, particularly those from online marketing companies, aiming to compete with cylindrical batteries.
