Global shipping giant Maersk has announced it will no longer work with companies operating in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, following sustained pressure from pro-Palestinian activists. The decision aligns with the UN Human Rights Office's guidelines, which identify businesses involved in illegal settlements under international law.
Activists welcomed the move but urged Maersk to go further by halting the transport of military equipment to Israel, particularly components used in F-35 fighter jets. They accuse the company of profiting from Israel's war on Gaza, which has killed over 55,000 Palestinians and is increasingly being labeled as genocide by international experts.
"Maersk's move sends a message: complicity in human rights violations is unacceptable," said Aisha Nizar of the Palestinian Youth Movement. Activists vow to keep pressuring Maersk until it ends all ties with the Israeli military.
