A MARE DOWN, UNABLE TO RISE — PLEASE KEEP HER IN YOUR THOUGHTS

We received a desperate plea for help from a woman at a camp in Faro, where a mare had been lying on the ground since the previous day, unable to get back onto her feet.

“I NEED HELP… THIS HORSE CAN’T BE LIFTED. CAN’T GET UP. IT’S BEEN LIKE THIS SINCE YESTERDAY AND I NEED A VETERINARIAN TO COME SEE.”

When a horse is down for so long and cannot rise, every moment matters. Jane Kemp, who helps our organisation, contacted veterinarian Joana Campos, who responded to the situation and went to assess the poor mare.

Sadly, the mare was unable to stand. Even with the vet directing the efforts of ten men, it simply wasn't possible to get her up safely. She also appeared to have a problem affecting her hindquarters on the side she had been lying on.

The vet administered anti-inflammatory medication, and thankfully, the mare perked up a little and showed an interest in eating. But she still couldn't get to her feet.

The next step is to obtain the appropriate machinery to help lift her safely. Joana the vet has left instructions with the people there, and they will contact her as soon as the equipment is available so she can return and continue helping.

**For now, we are hoping and praying that the right equipment can be found quickly. A huge thank you to Jane Kemp for helping coordinate the response and to the veterinarian Joana Campos for attending to this mare and doing what she could to help her.

FOREVER HOME NEEDED FOR PRINCESS - COIMBRA REGION, PORTUGAL

Princess is a sweet-natured white pony mare 15 years old, who has finally been rescued from a life spent largely alone, tied up outdoors and exposed to the elements, often without adequate food or water.

Thanks to a lovely foster couple who rescued her this week, Princess is now safe, fed and receiving love, but she desperately needs a forever home where she can enjoy shelter, proper care, and the companionship of other equines.

Princess is gentle and loving, but she needs some TLC, including a hoof trim, and the chance to regain her strength after a difficult life.

Location: Coimbra district, Portugal.

We are urgently looking for a kind, responsible home, ideally in the Coimbra region, where Princess can finally enjoy the comfort, friendship and happiness she deserves.

🏡 We’re looking for someone with experience caring for horses or ponies, ideally with other ponies for Princess to enjoy companionship with. She needs sufficient space and access to an open stable for shelter, rather than being kept in a closed stable.

We would like to help an SMVC supporter here in southern Portugal who rescued Zephyrus and gave him a safe and loving home after years of neglect, physical and mental abuse 😢

Zephyrus now urgently needs surgery for a serious tooth infection. The treatment and transport to Lisbon are expected to cost around €3,500, which she cannot manage alone.

An update on Barnabé.

When Barnabé arrived with us, he already had a large swelling on the left side of his face. At this stage, we don’t know the cause, but we’re hoping it is related to a dental issue. X-rays will help us understand what we’re dealing with.

Maria Joana Campos will be visiting on Thursday to examine Barnabé and take X-rays.

We’ll keep you updated once we have more information. Thank you for keeping Barnabé in your thoughts.

URGENT RESCUE YESTERDAY
- Emergency response yesterday

Yesterday, we were contacted regarding a 20 year old broodmare whose situation had become urgent and whose life was at risk if no immediate intervention was made.

The mare had been separated abruptly from her foal and, in her distress and desperation to be reunited with her baby, injured her hock. Following her injury, She was “no longer wanted” and we were informed that an urgent intervention was needed to prevent further consequences for her life!!! 😳

Hope was brought to safety to Jane Kemp and will receive veterinary treatment for her injury. She is now in a secure environment where she can recover and begin her rehabilitation.

She is very nervous around people, which is understandable given what she has experienced and needs to learn how to trust people. For now, she will be given a quiet environment, appropriate care, and the time she needs to gradually regain her confidence.

Hope is now safe, and her rehabilitation has begun!!

➡️ 🐴 Foster Home Needed Urgently – 20-Year-Old Broodmare

We’re urgently looking for a foster home for a gentle 20-year-old broodmare near Cercal do Alentejo.

She has recently been separated from her foal and has an injury to her hock. Our vet examined her yesterday, thoroughly cleaned and treated the wound, and applied a bandage. The injury did not require stitches, and she’s now recovering well with proper care.

She needs a safe, calm place where she can rest and heal while receiving basic daily care.

If you have space and experience with horses, or know someone who might be able to help, please get in touch as soon as possible.

He’s on his way!!!!!!!!!!! ❤️🫏

We’re so happy to share that we have successfully collected our donkey, prepared him for transport, and safely loaded him for his journey. He is now on his way to us, and we can’t wait to welcome him to the rescue!

BRAGANÇA DONKEY UPDATE
GOOD NEWS! 🇵🇹

We are so incredibly grateful for the huge outpouring of support following our urgent appeal for this poor donkey. Thank you to everyone who shared, tagged, reached out and tried to help us find a way forward. And we finally have some good news…

Thanks to the incredible patience and hard work of the people on the ground in Bragança, the owner has agreed to hand him over so that he can be rescued and receive the care he desperately needs. We cannot thank them enough for everything they have done.

But we are not there yet. Now we urgently need to arrange and fund his transport, have a vet assess him and make sure he is fit to travel, and then get him safely to us. Once he arrives, we will immediately begin treating his wounds and giving him the care he needs.

🚨 URGENT HELP NEEDED – BRAGANÇA 🚨

We’ve just received an urgent message about a poor donkey who has been spotted and tracked in the Bragança area. We desperately want to help rescue him, but we need someone local who can assist us.

Does anyone live in or near Bragança, or know someone there who could help? We need someone who can go and speak with the owner and help us assess the situation.
