Loft Windows & Doors - Modern Steel System

There’s something special about the look of steel-style windows and doors.

With their slim black frames, generous areas of glass and clean architectural lines, they can completely change the character of a space. Originally inspired by industrial buildings, old factories and converted lofts, this style has evolved into one of the most popular choices for modern homes.

Today, you don’t need to live in a city loft to enjoy the look.

So, what makes loft-style windows and doors so distinctive?

It starts with the proportions. Slim profiles allow more glass and less visual obstruction, creating a beautiful balance between structure and openness. The result is a space filled with natural light while still maintaining a strong architectural character.

Black frames are especially popular because they create a striking contrast with almost any material. They look equally at home next to warm natural wood, stone, concrete, brick or clean white walls.

And that’s what makes this style so versatile.

There are also different steel solutions depending on the effect and functionality you are looking for. Let's look at the options together.

For example, the UNICO steel window system combines the elegant, slim appearance of steel with a thermal break, making it suitable not only for interiors but also for modern architectural projects where energy performance matters.

For interiors, LOFT steel doors create that unmistakable industrial character. Their slim profiles, large glass areas and optional muntin configurations make them a beautiful way to separate rooms while keeping the feeling of openness and natural light.

And for something even more flexible, there is the LOFT FOLDING system, which is a steel, glass folding solution that allows a space to be divided or opened up whenever you need it. The panels fold together like an accordion, making it possible to completely change the way a room is used in just moments.

Loft doors can be used to separate a kitchen from a living room without making the space feel closed in. Glass partitions can define a home office, hallway or dining area while allowing light to flow freely throughout the interior.

Loft-style windows, on the other hand, can become a feature of the architecture itself, especially when used in large openings, floor-to-ceiling installations or modern extensions.

The beauty of the steel look is that it combines two things that don’t always go together: industrial character and modern elegance.

While black is the classic choice, there are no rules saying your windows and doors have to be black. Different colours, finishes, configurations and glass options allow the design to be tailored to the architecture of your home.

Whether you are creating a true industrial-inspired interior or simply looking for a modern way to bring more light, character and visual connection into your home, loft-style windows and doors are worth considering.

Modern. Architectural. Timeless.
That’s the beauty of the loft look!

Got a Window & Door Measurement Appointment Coming Up? Here's How to Make the Most of It! 📏

When most people think about a measurement appointment, they imagine someone arriving with a tape measure, taking a few notes and leaving.
But there's much more to it than that.

Your installer isn't just there to measure your windows and doors - they're there to assess your home, spot any potential issues and help you choose the best solution. That's why this visit is the perfect time to ask questions. A few minutes of conversation now could save you time, money and unnecessary stress later on.

Here are some of the most important things worth asking about. 👇

What's actually included in the installation?
Not every company offers the same service, so don't be afraid to ask.
- Will your old windows and doors be removed and disposed of?
- Are trims and finishing works included?
- What happens if the installer discovers damaged brickwork or uneven openings once the old frames are removed?

Knowing exactly what's covered means there won't be any unexpected surprises or costs when installation day comes.

Would you recommend warm installation?
You've probably heard the term before - but is it actually worth the extra cost?
Ask your installer whether a warm installation is suitable for your property and why. They should be able to explain the benefits, the materials they'll use and whether it's the right choice for your home rather than simply trying to upsell you.

Do you have any samples I can look at?
If they're installing products from a particular manufacturer, ask whether they have any samples with them. This is particularly important, as seeing frame colours, cross sections or different finishes in person can make choosing much easier than scrolling through photos online. Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference.

What would you recommend for my home?
Every house is different and the fitting teams have already seen so many, they know things you may not consider. A knowledgeable installer will consider things like insulation, security, ventilation, natural light and your budget before making a recommendation.

Have you spotted anything that could cause problems?
A measurement visit isn't only about dimensions.
It's also a chance for the installer to identify uneven walls, damaged openings, structural issues or anything else that could affect the installation.
It's much better to discuss these things now than discover them halfway through the project.

📅 What should I expect on installation day?
Ask how long the work is likely to take, how many installers will be there and whether there's anything you should do before they arrive.
Should furniture be moved? Do blinds or curtains need to come down? Can you stay in the house while the work is being carried out?
Knowing what to expect makes the whole process much less stressful for everyone.

What warranty for the service is included?
Don't forget to ask about guarantees as it may sometimes differ for the service and products.

This appointment is your opportunity to get expert advice, compare options, understand the installation process and make sure you're investing in the right products for your home.

So don't be afraid to ask questions. A good installer will always be happy to answer them - and the more you know before placing your order, the more confident you'll feel about your decision. 🙌

We believe the best projects always start with a good conversation. At FATE, we work with trusted installation teams who have been fitting windows and doors for many years. Their experience, attention to detail and commitment to quality mean you can feel confident that your project is in safe hands from the very first measurement through to the final installation.

If you haven't found an installer yet, just let us know when we're preparing your quote, and we'll be happy to recommend one of our trusted fitting teams.

A project with a difference… and one we really enjoyed bringing to life.

Some projects are straightforward. Others make you stop, think and find the right solution - and this was definitely one of them.

For this property, we combined Ideal 4000 casement windows, opening outwards, with custom-shaped REHAU Synego windows to create a look that is both modern and full of character which you can see on the attached photos.

The project also features REHAU Synego Slide sliding doors, finished with toughened glass for both style and practicality.

And the finishing touch? 🖤
Everything is Jet Black Matt externally, paired with white interiors, a simple combination that remains a solution that can match everything.

Let’s not forget about the view from these new windows and doors... absolutely breathtaking! 😍

💷 Total project value: £25,300 including delivery.

We love projects like this - where different shapes, systems and design details have to work perfectly together.

A huge thank you to our client for trusting us with the project and giving us the opportunity to create something a little different. 🙌

Another challenge completed. Another home transformed. 🖤

🏡 What You Need to Know Before Requesting a Quote for Windows & Doors - And What Every Professional Salesperson Should Tell You!

Buying new windows and doors isn't just another purchase, it's an investment that should last for decades. Yet many people compare quotes based on price alone. 💰
The truth is, a professional quotation should be much more than just a number on a piece of paper. It should help you understand what you're buying, why it's being recommended, and most importantly, whether it's the right solution for your home.
Here's what you should know before asking for a quote - and what you should expect from your salesperson.

📝 What information should YOU provide?

The more information you share, the better the recommendation will be.
First and foremost, where is your property located?
Climate matters. Homes near the coast, in mountainous regions, or areas with strong winds, high humidity, or extreme temperatures require different solutions. The orientation of your home (north, south, east, or west) can also influence the best glazing and frame options.

Is it a new build, renovation, or replacement project?
Every project has different technical requirements and cost for the installation may differ.

What are your priorities?
Energy efficiency? Noise reduction? Security? Easy maintenance? Modern design? Every customer has different expectations, and your windows and doors should reflect them.

Are you planning to install roller shutters, external blinds, insect screens, or a smart home system?
These features should be considered from the very beginning, not as an afterthought as they impact the price.

Who will be using the property?
Families with young children, elderly residents, or pets may benefit from additional safety features, low thresholds, or specific opening systems.

What is the budget for this project?
This will help the professional tailor the project to your needs while taking your budget into account.

What should your salesperson explain?
A professional salesperson shouldn't just sell a product, they should educate and advise you.

Ask questions like:

- Why are you recommending this particular window or door system? Is this solution suitable for my home and location?

- What are the thermal, acoustic, and security performance ratings?

- What type of glazing and hardware are included in the quotation?
These components have a huge impact on comfort, durability, and energy efficiency.

- Does the quotation include everything?
Ask whether installation materials, sills, extensions, fixing systems, sealing tapes, or other accessories are included - or if they'll become unexpected extra costs later.
- What does the warranty actually cover?

How long is it valid? Does it include installation? What conditions must be met to maintain it?

- What happens after the installation?
Is after-sales service available? Can replacement parts be ordered in the future if needed?

- What is the expected lead time from survey to installation?
Knowing the full timeline helps you plan your project with confidence.

💡 Remember: The cheapest quote isn't always the best value.

A slightly higher investment today can mean:
-> Lower heating and cooling costs.
-> Better sound insulation.
-> Improved home security.
-> Longer product lifespan.
-> Fewer service issues in the future.

A professional quotation isn't just about how much you'll pay in general, most importantly it should be very transparent and reflect all of the features that are needed invidiaully for your property.

The best salespeople don't only provide prices, they ask questions, explain the differences, and recommend solutions tailored to your home's location, your budget,, and your long-term expectations. 🤝

When comparing quotes, don't just ask, "How much does it cost?" Instead, you may ask, "Why is this the right solution for my home?"

Your future comfort depends on the answers!

🏡 AluClad Windows: Why Aluminium-Clad Timber Windows Are So Popular in the UK and Ireland?

When selecting new windows, homeowners often compare materials such as uPVC, timber, or aluminium. However, another solution has become increasingly popular, particularly throughout the UK, Ireland, and other regions with demanding weather conditions: AluClad windows, also known as aluminium-clad timber windows.

This innovative system combines the natural warmth and insulation of timber on the inside with a durable aluminium protective layer on the exterior. The result is a window that offers the beauty of natural wood indoors while providing outstanding resistance to the elements outside.

What Are AluClad Windows?
An AluClad window consists of a timber window fitted with specially engineered aluminium cladding on the external face of the frame and sash.

The aluminium does not replace the timber, it simply acts as a protective shield, creating a highly weather-resistant exterior while leaving the warm, natural timber finish visible inside the home.

This allows homeowners to enjoy the best characteristics of both materials without many of the maintenance requirements associated with traditional exposed timber windows.

Designed for Coastal and Harsh Weather Conditions
One of the main reasons AluClad windows are so popular in the UK and Ireland is the climate. Many homes experience frequent rainfall, strong winds, high humidity, and rapidly changing weather throughout the year. Coastal properties face even harsher conditions due to salt-laden air, which can accelerate the ageing of many external building materials.

The aluminium outer layer provides excellent protection against these environmental challenges:

✔ Resistant to moisture
✔ Resistant to corrosion when properly powder coated
✔ No risk of rot or peeling like exposed timber
✔ Excellent durability in coastal environments

For homes located near the sea, the ocean, estuaries, or other exposed locations, aluminium cladding can significantly extend the lifespan of the window while helping it maintain its appearance for many years.

Lower Maintenance
Traditional timber windows require regular maintenance to preserve both their appearance and long-term performance. With AluClad windows, the exterior aluminium surface requires very little attention. In most cases, occasional cleaning with water and a mild detergent is all that's needed.

Meanwhile, the timber on the inside remains protected from direct exposure to rain, UV rays, and changing weather conditions, allowing homeowners to enjoy the natural beauty of wood without the same level of upkeep.

Excellent Thermal Performance
Because the structural frame remains timber, AluClad windows retain the excellent insulating properties that wood naturally provides. Timber has low thermal conductivity, making it one of the best materials for reducing heat loss and improving indoor comfort.

Combined with modern triple glazing, advanced sealing systems, and energy-efficient construction, aluminium-clad timber windows can achieve exceptional thermal performance while maintaining impressive durability.

Contemporary Outside, Natural Inside
One of the biggest advantages of AluClad windows is their unique combination of aesthetics. Inside the home, the natural timber creates warmth and character.
Outside, the aluminium delivers clean lines, modern styling, and long-lasting colour stability.

Powder-coated aluminium is available in a wide range of colours, textures, and dual-colour options, allowing homeowners to match virtually any architectural style. It is this combination that makes AluClad windows equally suitable for traditional homes, contemporary properties, and luxury developments.

Are There Any Drawbacks?
Like every window system, AluClad windows also come with a few considerations.

The biggest factor is cost.
Because they combine two premium materials and require a more sophisticated manufacturing process, aluminium-clad timber windows are generally more expensive than standard timber or uPVC alternatives.

The external aluminium profiles, specialist coatings, and more complex assembly all contribute to the higher purchase price. Repairs may also require manufacturer-specific replacement components if the aluminium cladding becomes damaged.

While powder-coated aluminium is extremely durable, repairing its finish is typically more specialised than simply repainting a traditional timber frame.

Summer Market Update: What’s Happening in the Windows & Doors Industry This July?

As we move through July, many people assume that the windows and doors market slows down for the summer holidays. While it's true that the pace often becomes a little calmer, the season remains one of the best times to start planning a home improvement project. 🏠

For homeowners, summer offers the ideal conditions to think ahead. Whether you're building a new home, renovating an existing property, or simply looking to improve energy efficiency, ordering your windows and doors during the quieter summer period can help you stay one step ahead before the busy autumn season begins!

One of the biggest advantage this year is the continued stability in material availability. Timber, aluminium, and high-performance glazing remain readily available across most product ranges, allowing manufacturers to maintain reliable production schedules and predictable lead times. That's good news for customers looking to avoid unnecessary delays and keep their projects moving smoothly.

Another trend we're seeing is a growing interest in products that combine excellent thermal performance with modern aesthetics. Energy-efficient windows continue to be a priority as homeowners look for long-term savings on heating costs while also improving comfort throughout the year. Premium solutions such as aluminium-clad timber windows, triple glazing, and contemporary slim-frame designs remain increasingly popular, especially for new-build and renovation projects.

Summer is also the perfect opportunity to plan ahead before demand naturally increases after the holiday season. As September approaches, enquiries and orders traditionally become much busier as most homeowners prepare their properties for autumn and winter. By making decisions now, you can often enjoy greater flexibility when choosing products, colours, finishes, and installation dates. 👌

Replacing windows and doors is not only about improving the appearance of your home - it's also an investment in comfort, security, and energy efficiency. High-quality joinery can help reduce heat loss, improve acoustic insulation, increase natural light, and add lasting value to your property. These are benefits that can be enjoyed for many years to come.

If you're considering new windows or doors, now is an excellent time to explore your options and start planning your project. This will allow for a peace of mind and wil get you ready for the colder months ahead!

At Fate, we believe that every project is unique. That’s why we offer free, unlimited consultations, quotes, and comparisons to help you make the right choice with confidence. Our specialists take the time to understand your individual needs and consider all important factors, including local weather conditions, climate, budget, architectural style, and your personal design preferences. 🤍

Outward-Opening Windows: A Practical Look at Their Limitations

When choosing new windows, most homeowners focus on appearance, energy efficiency, or price. However, the opening method is just as important, as it directly affects everyday comfort, maintenance, and long-term performance.

Outward-opening windows are a popular choice in some countries such as the UK, Ireland, and parts of Northern Europe. They offer several advantages, including good weather performance and the ability to save interior space. Nevertheless, like any window system, they also come with certain compromises that are worth considering before making a decision.

1. Reduced everyday convenience

One of the biggest differences between outward- and inward-opening windows is the level of everyday functionality. Modern inward-opening windows typically feature a tilt & turn mechanism, allowing the sash to open fully inward for easy access or tilt securely at the top for controlled ventilation. Many systems also include a micro-ventilation position, providing a gentle supply of fresh air without fully opening the window.

By comparison, outward-opening windows generally do not offer the same combination of opening modes. While they provide effective ventilation, they typically lack the versatility of tilt-and-turn operation, making everyday use less flexible.

The inward-opening design also makes cleaning the exterior glass much easier from inside the building, particularly on upper floors. In addition, adjusting external blinds, cleaning the frame, or placing decorations near the window is often more convenient, since the sash opens into the room rather than projecting outside.

2. Greater load on the hinges

With an outward-opening window, the weight of the sash is supported differently than with an inward-opening system.

When the window is open, the hinges carry greater mechanical loads, especially on larger or heavier glazed units. This is particularly important as modern homes increasingly use large triple-glazed windows to achieve excellent thermal performance.

Although high-quality hardware is designed to withstand these loads, the increased weight means that hinge performance becomes even more critical over the lifetime of the profile.

3. More frequent adjustment and maintenance

Because of the additional forces acting on the hardware, outward-opening windows may require more regular adjustment to maintain smooth operation.
Over time, everyday use, changing temperatures, and wind loads can affect the alignment of the sash. Periodic inspection and professional adjustment help ensure proper sealing, easy operation, and long-term durability.

This does not necessarily mean the system is unreliable, it simply means maintenance may play a more important role than with some inward-opening alternatives.

4. Wider frame profiles

Another aspect that is often overlooked is the design of the frame itself.
Many outward-opening systems require wider frame and sash profiles to accommodate the hardware and ensure structural stability. As a result, the visible frame area can be larger, reducing the overall glass surface.

While the difference may seem small, it can slightly reduce the amount of natural daylight entering the room and create a less minimalist appearance compared to modern slim-profile inward-opening systems.

For homeowners who prioritise panoramic views and maximum glass area, this is an important factor to consider.

5. Higher manufacturing costs

Outward-opening windows are often more complex to manufacture due to their specialised hardware, sealing systems, and structural design.
Depending on the chosen system and market, they may therefore be more expensive than comparable inward-opening windows.

The final cost depends on many factors - including dimensions, glazing specification, hardware options, and finishes - but the opening method itself can influence the overall budget.

6. Wind and weather considerations

When left open, outward-opening windows are directly exposed to wind.
Strong wind may place additional pressure on the hinges and opening mechanism, particularly if the window is opened fully. In exposed coastal or high-wind locations, selecting the correct hardware and using the window carefully becomes especially important.

High-quality systems are thoroughly tested for wind resistance, but no window should be left fully open during severe weather conditions.

7. Potential limitations around the building

An outward-opening sash occupies external space when opened.
This may not be an issue in detached houses with generous outdoor areas, but it can become a consideration where windows overlook balconies, narrow walkways, terraces, or frequently used garden spaces.

In some situations, the opening sash can interfere with outdoor furniture, plants, or pedestrian access.

Choosing the right solution

None of these points mean that outward-opening windows are a poor choice. In fact, they remain the preferred solution in many countries thanks to their weather performance, security, and traditional architectural style.

However, understanding both the advantages and limitations allows homeowners, architects, and builders to make an informed decision based on the specific requirements of each project.

If your priorities include ultra-slim sightlines, maximum glazing area, easy cleaning from inside the building, and minimal maintenance, an inward-opening system may offer greater everyday convenience.

Ultimately, the optimal window system should be selected based on technical requirements, building design, and intended usage conditions.
