Germany has built a 40-meter vertical "wind chimney" in Berlin that creates its own artificial wind to generate electricity day and night using urban heat sources. Unlike traditional wind turbines that rely on natural wind, this innovative structure works by harnessing the temperature difference between the heated air inside the chimney and the cooler surrounding environment. Here’s how it works:

Urban Heat as Fuel: The chimney absorbs heat from sunlight and city infrastructure.

Airflow Creation: Warm air rises up the tower, creating a continuous updraft even on calm, windless days.

Electricity Generation: The moving air turns turbines within the chimney, which then generate renewable power around the clock.

This pilot project is designed not only for energy production but also for community engagement, often paired with green spaces and public art installations. The wind chimney can supplement city power grids, help cities reduce their carbon footprint, and provide decentralized clean energy even in dense urban cores, making it a promising model for sustainable urban development.

Researchers at the University of Glasgow have used advanced simulations to perfect designs for bladeless wind turbines (BWTs) — a quieter, wildlife-friendly alternative to traditional spinning blades.

🌪️ Instead of rotating, these turbines harness vortex-induced vibrations — wind makes their cylindrical masts gently oscillate, and that motion is turned into electricity.

⚡ The winning design? 80 cm tall, 65 cm wide, and capable of producing up to 460 watts — 4× more than current prototypes.
