Soil Compaction – Short Procedure:

Prepare the soil – Remove unsuitable material and level the area.

Check OMC & MDD – Conduct Proctor Test: ASTM D698 / ASTM D1557.

Place soil in layers – Maintain approved lift thickness.

Adjust moisture – Bring soil near the required OMC.

Compact – Use the approved roller/equipment with required passes.

Field Density Test – Verify compaction by ASTM D1556 (Sand Cone) or ASTM D6938 (Nuclear Gauge).

Calculate compaction – Field Dry Density ÷ MDD × 100.

If failed – Rework, adjust moisture, compact again and retest.

🏗️ Why is a gap forming between the RCC column and brick wall?

Have you noticed a vertical gap developing at the junction between a concrete column and a brick masonry wall? 🤔

👉 The most common reason is differential movement. Concrete and brick masonry behave differently when exposed to changes in temperature and moisture. Concrete may shrink or deform while the masonry responds differently, causing separation at the interface.

Other possible causes include:
🔹 Poor bonding or inadequate wall-to-column connection
🔹 Drying shrinkage of mortar
🔹 Beam/column deflection
🔹 Foundation settlement or structural movement
🔹 Poor workmanship or an inadequately filled joint

⚠️ Important: A small gap does not necessarily mean the building is structurally unsafe. But if the gap is wide, increasing, or accompanied by significant cracks, settlement, or other movement, it should be properly investigated.
