Oil refinery
Step 1: Fabrication of Shell Sections
In a heavy fabrication shop, thick steel plates are rolled into large cylindrical sections called "shells" or "cans". You see many of them lying on the shop floor.
Step 2: Fit-Up, Alignment and Welding
The text on video says: Rolled Shell Sections → Fit-Up → Alignment → Welding
Using overhead EOT cranes, one shell is lifted and stacked precisely over the other. Workers check alignment, then weld the circumferential seams. You see sparks from manual welding on scaffolding all around the joint. This is repeated until the full 50m height is achieved.
Step 3: External Piping & Nozzles
Once the main body is ready, dozens of nozzles are cut and welded. These are the inlet/outlet points for crude oil, steam, reflux, and draw-off of different products. Workers are grinding and finishing the nozzle welds.
Step 4: Platforms, Ladders & Insulation Rings
Yellow safety platforms, vertical ladders, and caged walkways are welded around the column at different elevations. These are for operators to access instruments and valves during operation. Insulation support rings are also added.
Step 5: Final Inspection & NDT Testing
Before dispatch, every weld is tested. In the clip you see technicians doing NDT - Non-Destructive Testing - one holding an ultrasonic flaw detector. This checks for cracks, porosity or lack of fusion inside the weld without damaging it. Other NDTs like Radiography (X-Ray) and Dye-Penetrant are also done.
Step 6: Ready for Installation
The finished column is moved to site on heavy trailers and erected by 2-3 large crawler cranes. The last shots show it installed on its concrete foundation in the refinery, connected to the piping rack system. The caption: CRUDE OIL DISTILLATION COLUMN - ASSEMBLED • INSPECTED • READY FOR OPERATION
