🧠 CLAUDE (PROMPT STRUCTURING)

Using AI is easy.
Getting a useful engineering output from AI is where the real skill begins.

Many engineers open Claude AI, write a simple one-line instruction and expect a professional result. But AI output depends heavily on the quality, context and structure of your prompt.

✍️ For Planning Engineers, proper prompt structuring can be especially useful because our work involves project-specific information, calculations, reports, schedules, risks and progress data.

A strong prompt should clearly explain:

🎯 Role — What expertise should AI apply?
📋 Context — What type of project are you working on?
📊 Input — What information or data is available?
⚙️ Task — What exactly should AI analyze or prepare?
📑 Output — In what format do you need the result?

For example, instead of simply asking AI to “prepare a project report,” you can provide the project type, reporting period, available progress information, required KPIs and desired reporting structure.

🏗️ This approach can support tasks involving DPRs, BOQ data, activity lists, man-hours, risks, progress reports and project-control documentation.

AI should support your engineering judgment — not replace it.

What happens when a Planning Engineer combines engineering experience + Primavera P6 + Artificial Intelligence?

The way project planning and controls work is changing.

⚡ AI tools such as Claude AI can support engineers in handling many repetitive and analytical tasks more efficiently. But the objective is not simply to “use AI.” The real value comes from knowing where and how to apply it within your project workflow.

📊 Imagine using AI to support tasks such as:

🔹 Structuring project information
🔹 Converting BOQ data into planning inputs
🔹 Preparing activity lists and WBS ideas
🔹 Supporting DPR and progress-report preparation
🔹 Assisting with man-hour calculations
🔹 Reviewing project risks
🔹 Organizing tracking information
🔹 Developing ideas for dynamic progress dashboards

Primavera P6 remains an important planning and scheduling tool, while AI can become an additional layer that helps engineers process information and prepare outputs more efficiently.

🏗️ For Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers working in construction, EPC and Oil & Gas projects, understanding this combination can be a valuable professional capability.

🎯 The future Planning Engineer may need more than software knowledge. Understanding planning logic, project controls and AI-assisted workflows can make your skill set much more relevant to modern projects.

📊 TOTAL FLOAT

If you are working with Primavera P6, understanding Total Float is not optional — it is one of the fundamental concepts behind professional schedule analysis.

But here is the important question:

❓ Do you only know where Total Float appears in P6, or do you actually understand what that number is telling you about your project?

⏳ Total Float generally represents the amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying the project’s relevant completion constraint or calculated finish, depending on the schedule setup.

For a Planning Engineer, this information can be extremely useful.

📉 When float starts reducing, it can indicate that the available scheduling flexibility is decreasing. Activities may move closer to becoming critical, and the planning team needs to understand why the movement is happening.

🔍 That means you should look beyond the number and investigate factors such as:

🔹 Activity relationships
🔹 Remaining durations
🔹 Actual progress
🔹 Project calendars
🔹 Constraints
🔹 Required completion dates
🔹 Changes in the critical path

⚠️ Simply saying “this activity has 10 days float” is not enough.

A professional Planning Engineer should be able to explain where that float comes from, why it changed and what impact the change could have on the schedule.

🎯 That is the difference between operating Primavera P6 and actually understanding project scheduling.

🔥 Primavera P6

A professional project schedule is much more than simply adding activities and durations.
A Planning Engineer must understand how Engineering, Procurement and Construction are logically connected within the schedule.
🏗️ How should procurement activities be planned?
📦 Where should long-lead items appear?
🔗 How should procurement be linked with engineering and construction?

📅 How can these activities affect the Critical Path?
Understanding these relationships is what helps transform a basic P6 user into a professional project planner.

🎯 Learn Primavera P6 through real project-based scheduling examples, not just software commands.
