Soda ash (also known as washing soda or sodium carbonate) is an excellent laundry booster. It works by highly increasing the alkalinity of the wash water, which softens hard water and allows your regular detergent to lift dirt and break down grease much more effectively.
Here is everything you need to know about using it, including safety on colors and the exact measurements.
Can it be used on colored t-shirts?
Yes, absolutely. Soda ash is safe for colored t-shirts, especially those made of cotton, polyester, or blends. In fact, textile artists use soda ash as a dye fixative for tie-dying colored shirts.
Important Caveats for Fabrics:
* Test for colorfastness: If the t-shirt is brand new or brightly colored, high alkalinity can sometimes cause loose, unfixed dyes to bleed.
* Avoid delicate fibers: Never use soda ash on wool, silk, or leather. The high pH will destroy these protein-based fibers.
The Ratios: How much to use
Depending on what you are trying to achieve, here are the standard measurements:
* Standard Laundry Booster: Add 1/2 cup of soda ash per regular load of laundry.
* Heavy Soil or Very Hard Water: Increase to 1 cup per load.
* Stain Pre-Soaking: Dissolve 2 tablespoons of soda ash per 1 gallon of warm water.
How to add it to your wash
For everyday laundry boosting, order matters to ensure the powder dissolves properly and doesn't clump.
1. Measure and add to the empty drum�Before adding clothes�Measure out your 1/2 cup of soda ash. Sprinkle it directly into the empty washing machine drum. Do not put it in the detergent dispenser drawer, as the powder can clump up and clog the lines.
2. Load the t-shirts�Add your colored t-shirts (or other laundry) on top of the soda ash.
3. Add regular detergent�Add your normal amount of liquid or powder laundry detergent to its usual dispenser (or directly into the drum if you use pods). Soda ash boosts detergent; it doesn't replace it.
4. Wash as usual�Run your standard wash cycle. Warm or hot water helps the soda ash dissolve best, but it will still work in cold water if you give the machine a minute to agitate before the cycle fully kicks in.
