Simple Transfer of Load

Facts:
1. the clients wish to have a right of way which would accommodate their vehicles to enter their compound
2. The existing structure (ancestral house) has its supporting columns situated at the right of way.
3. It is on the interest of the clients to have the right of way for their vehicles without demolishing the existing building

Issue:
1. Maintaining the building at the same time providing the necessary carriage way for right of way
2. Provide an alternative support system for the upper floor of the existing building

Engineering solution:
1. Design a steel beam (built-up) which will serve as support structure for the timber girders of the existing building
2. Support such beam at its extremities using reinforced concrete columns to be locate at points not obstructing the right of way. Beams shall be jacked to the existing girders to have a fit attachment. Such jacking tool shall be supported by the reinforced concrete column equipped with base plate of designed thickness
3. When the steel beams are in place, the connections of column to beam are secured
4. Gradually remove the existing columns starting from demolishing the RC pedestal then cutting the timber post

Ruling:
1. The reaction of the timber girders and posts shall be utilized as the applied load
2. Reactive elements such as shear, bending moments ang torsional moments are calculated using the applied loads
3. The components of the beam section and its connection was designed using chapter 5 of NSCP 2015
4. Reinforced concrete columns and foundation was designed using chapter 4 of NSCP 2015
5. Actual load transfer will take place after removal of existing columns.
6. Lateral braces (struts) are provided to combat possible lateral loads normal to the steel beam
