The Philippines is facing growing concerns over the long-term sustainability of its freshwater supply.

DENR WARNS PHILIPPINES FACING POSSIBLE “WATER BANKRUPTCY”

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources warned that the Philippines is approaching a critical “water bankruptcy” situation, where national water consumption is beginning to exceed the country’s natural ability to replenish freshwater resources.

Officials said rising demand from households, agriculture, industries, and expanding urban populations is placing increasing pressure on rivers, reservoirs, groundwater systems, and watersheds nationwide. Experts also pointed to deforestation, pollution, climate variability, and inefficient water infrastructure as major factors worsening the situation.

Authorities are now accelerating projects involving desalination, groundwater development, water distribution systems, and conservation measures to help address future shortages.
