In the Saudi desert, they built a 23-kilometre flood channel — and they did it without steel.
Saudi Aramco mandated GFRP rebar for the Jizan Flood Mitigation Channel to fight corrosion, speed construction, and cut long-term maintenance. Suppliers and contractors produced and installed millions of linear meters of GFRP (industry sources report figures in the multi-million meter range) and recorded very high placement rates during peak works.
Why this matters for PH engineers:
This is proof that GFRP can be delivered at national-project scale — and its corrosion resistance makes it a compelling choice for coastal, port, and flood projects.
