🏗️ Slab‑on‑Ground Foundations (NSCP 2015 + Other Codes)

Did you know that a slab‑on‑ground can act as a foundation if designed as a structural element (not just a simple floor slab)?

💡 Key Points Based on NSCP 2015:
1️⃣ 🔍 Soil Investigation (Sec. 303) – Foundation design should be based on geotechnical data, not assumptions.
2️⃣ 📐 Structural Analysis (Sec. 303.5.3) – When a slab carries loads from columns, moments, bending, shear and deflection should be considered just like any structural foundation.
3️⃣ 📏 Geotechnical Basis (Sec. 305.2) – Slab‑on‑grade or mat foundations may be designed based on geotechnical recommendations, especially on expansive soils, with the building official’s approval.

📘 Supporting international code principles:
▪ ACI 318‑19 Section 1.4.8 states that slabs‑on‑ground that transmit structural loads must be designed and detailed as structural elements (otherwise the ACI code doesn’t apply to simple non‑structural slabs).
▪ The International Building Code (IBC) has similar language: slab‑on‑ground foundations on expansive soils should be designed in accordance with recognized methods (e.g., WRI/CRSI, PTI) or approved by the building official.

✅ Takeaway: A slab‑on‑ground becomes a foundation only when it is engineered structurally and supported by soil investigation and design. It’s not simply “a slab on the ground.”
