A little knife rescue this week!

This interesting old knife came in for sharpening and reconditioning. The owner was keen to find out its brand, but the rust was so heavy that, even after cleaning it up, only a few faint letters could be uncovered.

I suspect it might be the Swiss brand Wenger, but the markings weren’t clear enough to be certain.

It’s always interesting to see what’s hiding underneath years of rust and wear. Sometimes a bit of work can give an old knife a new lease of life – even if its history remains a mystery!

Knives come in all sorts of interesting shapes and designs!

These knives have particularly attractive handles, shaped to give a good grip and control when using the blade. They’re made in an Asian style for a German company – an interesting blend of design influences.

A knife’s shape, handle and balance all contribute to how it feels in your hand. Everyone has their own preferences, but a comfortable grip can make a real difference when working with a knife.

Don’t be too quick to write off an old, rusty tool!

Some old knives and tools came in for reconditioning and sharpening. Once the rust was removed, it revealed some very good-quality pieces – including knives, an axe and a cleaver.

Rust can make an old tool look like it has reached the end of its life, but sometimes there’s a very good tool hiding underneath. If you come across something that looks too far gone, it can be worth getting it checked before throwing it out.

If you have knives, tools or other items that need sharpening or reconditioning, bring them along to the Redwood Market, Cleghorn Street, Blenheim on Saturday mornings or the Marlborough Farmers' Market on Sunday mornings.

A hand reel mower pictured in its natural habitat – out on the lawn rather than sitting in a dark corner of the shed!

For smaller sections, a hand mower can be a very practical option. No motor to start, no fuel or power to worry about – just pull it out, push it along and put it away when you’re done.

And if you’re looking for one, there can be some very good buys at second-hand shops and markets. It’s worth checking the condition of the blades and reel, though, as a bit of reconditioning can make a big difference.

Japanese knives have become very popular over the years, and it’s easy to see why. They can be sharpened to a very fine edge, making them a favourite for people who appreciate a good kitchen knife.

If your Japanese knife has a wooden handle, remember that the handle needs care too. Like other knives and tools with wooden handles, keeping the timber in good condition will help your tool stay looking and working well.

A good knife deserves a bit of care – including the handle as well as the blade.

An assortment of garden tools in for sharpening and reconditioning.

Something worth checking while you’re getting your garden tools ready for the season is the wooden handles. A little oil helps keep the timber in good condition and reduces the chance of it drying out and becoming brittle.

With the dry summer months ahead, now is a good time to give those handles some attention – along with making sure the tools themselves are sharp and ready to use.
