Project Spotlight: Wakatu Quay

Sitting at the edge of the Kaikōura waterfront, this new hospitality building reimagines a former working wharf as a destination shaped by sea, story, and community. With an expressive form inspired by the underside of a boat hull, the project demanded enclosure design that could stand up to powerful coastal conditions while preserving its sculptural clarity.

Working alongside Warren and Mahoney, the contractor, and specialist suppliers, we delivered a high-performing, durable envelope through minimalist detailing, engineered gutter systems, and a robust approach to moisture and corrosion control - proving that great architecture and great performance can go hand in hand.

The new year’s well and truly in full swing.

With end of year being a busy time for both us and our clients, we pushed our Christmas catch-up to this side of the holidays and it was well worth the wait.

A day spent swapping drawings and details for good company, good food, and a healthy dose of fresh air. With our team spread across New Zealand and Canada, getting everyone together in one place isn’t something we take for granted. Days like this are a real treat - a chance to reconnect, share a few laughs, and strengthen the relationships that underpin everything we do.

When testing sealants, there are two ways they can fail:
🔹 Adhesion - the sealant lets go of the surface.
🔹 Cohesion - the sealant itself breaks apart.

And here's the key: we want cohesive failure - and we don’t want adhesion failure.
Because cohesion means your bond to the substrate is stronger than the sealant itself - a sign of a truly robust joint.
