A transformer is an electric device that transfers electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction, changing the voltage and current level while keeping the frequency constant. It consists of two coils (Primary and Secondary) wound round a magnetic core and it's essential for efficient and safe transmission and distribution of Alternate Current (AC) power. Allowing voltage to be stepped up for long distance transmission and also step down at the distribution end for local consumption (residential, commercial or industrial).

Transformer Cooling Types

The transformer generates heat during operation due to electrical losses. Effective cooling is essential to prevent overheating, maintaining insulation integrity and ensure long term reliability. Cooling methods vary based on transformer size, application and environment.

The Main Part of Sub Station SLD (Single Line Diagram)

Lightning Arrester - Protect Equipment from HV (High Voltage Lightning or Power Surge by directing excess flow of voltage to ground

Instrument Transformer

Current Transformer (CT) : Measures high current by reducing it to a safe level for meters or Protection Devices

Potential Transformer (VT): Reduces High Voltage to a safe level for measuring or Monitoring. Connected parallel to the voltage side. Produce a standard low voltage (like 110 or 100V)

Circuit Breaker(CB) Stop the flow of Electricity in case of overloads, short circuits or Faults. Types Air, Vacuum, Oil ans SF6 Breakers.

Isolators (Disconnect Switches) Used to disconnect parts of the system for maintenance. Operate only after the circuit breaker cuts off current

Bus Bars – Connect different circuits and distribute electricity within the substation .

Why it’s important these component work together to ensure the substation operate safely and efficiently, protecting system from Damage or Providing Reliable Power.

In the world of Power systems, transmission lines are unsung heroes, carrying bulk energy across vast distances. But have you ever wondered why capacitors charging current plays such a critical role in their operations?

What is Capacitor Charging Current? Transmission lines inherently behaves like Capacitors due electric field between and around the conductors. When the voltage is applied, the line "Charges" just like capacitor, the charging current flows even when no Load is connected.

What are the Effect?

Voltage regulation: Unchecked charging current can lead to voltage rise at the receiving station causing insulation stress.

Power Losses: Charging current usually contribute to Energy Losses especially in the long and high - voltage lines.

System Stability: Managing these currents is key to maintaining grid stability.

How do we manage it?

Reactive Compensation by using Shunt Reactors to offset the capacitive effect

Optimal Line Design: Minimizing line Capacitance through Design

Operational Strategies: Effective Switching Schemes during light load Condition

The world is going Automation: Power Automation quickly detect and most times rectifies, isolating the affected part, so that proper corrective maintenance can be carried out by the utility company!

NOTE: None of the above can be achieve if Standard of Engineer, Equipment, Materials and Process are compromised!

What happens to a three phase motor when one phase is lost?

When one phase of 3-phase motor is lost, the motor experience single phasing which will definitely disrupt its operation. It continues to run but with reduce efficiency and increase strain. The motor draw more current from the remaining 2-phase, leading to overheating, vibration and excessive wear. It can cause Insulation Breakdown, which can lead to motor failure. Protection device like overload relays should be installed so that it detect the single phasing and shut down the Motor
