Front wheel drive, commonly known as FWD, is a drivetrain layout where the engine delivers power to the front wheels only. In this system, the engine, transmission, and differential are typically combined into a single unit called a transaxle, which sends torque directly to the front wheels through drive shafts. As the engine produces power, it is transferred through the transmission and differential, allowing the front wheels to both pull the vehicle forward and handle steering at the same time.
This setup offers several advantages, including better traction in wet or slippery conditions because the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels. It also improves fuel efficiency and interior space since there are fewer components like a long driveshaft running to the rear. However, because the front wheels handle both power delivery and steering, they can wear out faster and may experience reduced performance under heavy acceleration or sharp cornering. A well functioning FWD system provides stable, efficient, and predictable driving behavior for everyday use.
