DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LINKS AND STIRRUPS ⏬️

In reinforced concrete, we often hear the terms stirrups and links — and while they look similar, their roles are not the same. Here’s the distinction every young engineer should know:

🔹 Stirrups → Found in beams
• Act as closed-loop reinforcement around longitudinal bars.
• Resist shear forces and diagonal tension cracks.
• Keep main bars in place and prevent buckling.
• Typically rectangular or square in shape, spaced along the beam span.

🔹 Links → Found in columns
• Function as lateral ties around vertical reinforcement.
• Prevent buckling of column bars.
• Confinement improves ductility and strength of concrete.
• Can be square, rectangular, circular, or polygonal depending on the column.

• Location: Stirrups → beams | Links → columns
• Purpose: Stirrups → shear resistance | Links → lateral confinement
